two questions about GenuineIntel_x86_Family_6_Model_14/15

Need you help on this.

I am using a laptop with Genuine Intel CPU T2400 running Windows XP SP2. While I wasattempting to install a 64-bit Redhat in VMWare workstation, VMware-guest64check (http://download3.vmware.com/software/wkst/VMware-guest64check-6.0.0-45731.exe) said this CPU cannot simulate 64-bit OS. I checked in Intel website, http://ark.intel.com/cpu.aspx?groupId=27235, and found Intel Virtualization Technology is included in T2400. I have enabled VT in BIOS, reboot laptop, still cannot proceed. Then I executed VMware-guest64check on another machine with Intel Core2 CPU 6600 and it works here. I compared some parameter of these two CPUs and found most of the detail are the similar except for hardware_id. T2400 is GenuineIntel_x86_Family_6_Model_14 and 6600 is GenuineIntel_x86_Family_6_Model_15. My questions are as below.

1. What's the main difference between Model 14 and 15?
2.What's the possibility that I cannot intsall 64-bit OS on the machien withT2400? Is it possible that Model 15 contains some other codeset which is necessary to build-up a 64-bit OS on top of that?

As I am new here, forgive me if I have made any mistake or posted it in wrong board.

Hi Henry,

Asked about your question internally. I was told that Model 14 (Intel Core Duo) does not have Intel 64-bit extensions that are required to run 64-bit Oses. You will not be able to run 64-bit Oses on systems based on Model 14.

Hi David,

Thank you for your information. i realized there's no 64-bit extensions within T2400, Model 14.

I assume the key element to install a 64-bit OS is whether the chipset have "64 Architecture" or not, but "Virtualization Technology". If a chipset doesn't contain 64 architecture, it won't be able to install 64-bit OS on top of it. Right?

Right. You cannot run a 64-bit OS on a 32-bit architecture. Will not work in native or virtualized environments.
