Latest Bios for Nuc

Hello, after updating the Bios of my NUC6CAYH to version AY0076, neither UEFI Boot nor Legacy Boot recognize the hard drive, which is recognized by the Bios.  Secure boot is disabled. And of course before updating was working ok. Can anybody help me, please? Thank you very much.

I suggest you reinstall this BIOS again, but this time use the jumper-based BIOS Recovery process. Place the .BIO file in the root folder of a flash drive. This should be the only .BIO file on this flash drive.
Power off the NUC and then power it on again - holding the power button in for a full three seconds. Wait for the Power Button Menu to appear.
Once the Power Button Menu appears, press the F4 key to start the BIOS Recovery process.
Once the BIOS Recovery process says it is complete, power off and unplug the NUC from AC power for 5 minutes.
Power back on and use the F2 key to enter BIOS Setup.
Once there, press F9 to reset the BIOS configuration and then F10 to save this change and exit BIOS Setup.
Test to see if the system will boot.
Hope this helps,

Hi n_scott_pearson. No way. I tried as you said and I think every forms that it´s possible updating the bios and nothing. The boot doesn´t recognize the ssd. I would like to get the old version of bios... Anyway very many thanks for your attention and a cordial greeting.

Thanks n_scott_pearson for uploading the AY0076.zip!

You suggested to do the "jumper-based BIOS Recovery process". But you didn't say anything about removing the jumper, or relocating it. If I press the power button in for a full three seconds, do I need to remove the jumper first before plugging the NUC in?

Many thanks

Tom

Hhmmm, you did reset the BIOS configuration after the BIOS Recovery operation, right? And you tried changing to Legacy Boot?

The release notes don't say anything about support for Legacy Boot being removed at any point between BIOS 65 and BIOS 76. Let me check with the old BIOS team and we'll see whether this happened...

Yes, after Bios Recovery and some time power off,  I did the Bios reset with F9, F10 and star again, no ssd neither Legacy nor Uefi, I traied each one and no way a lot of attempts and after change the Bios to 65, only activate Legacy to recognize the ssd ok.

Hi Quasio et al.

Do you still have access to the BIOS?
I cannot find the NUC6CAYH BIOS on the Intel Download Center

Thank you in advance.

You'll find little NUC content on the Intel site. 7th gen and newer transferred to Asus and you can download from their site. 6th gen and older is essentially gone. Luckily, I have an archive. I have attached the last BIOS.

Enjoy!

You should follow my instructions (above) to do a BIOS Recovery, this time using the attached .BIO file.

In most cases, drive detection issues are the result of having the SATA Mode parameter improperly set. You may, for example, have to change it from AHCI to RAID.

Ok, so this is in verbose words how I successfully upgraded the BIOS on a NUC6CAYH, from version 0064 to 0076:

  1. Download the ZIP-file AY0076.zip provided by n_scott_pearson.
  2. Extract AY0076.bio from the zip and check with sha256sum, if the checksum is the same as the checksum that is still visible on Intel sites, where the version once was available for download but has now been removed:
    $ sha256sum AY0076.bio
    ab8caa3fe9e5b3d14afb765e6a806d48d5918d21d85c3bff083b6b17ea4e7ec2 AY0076.bio
This is an exact match, so the file provided by n_scott_pearson seems to be identical with the original from Intel.
  3. Copy the AY0076.bio onto a USB-Stick that is formatted as FAT32, into the root directory, making sure that there are no other *.bio files. Other files and directories were present on my USB stick, but obviously they were not a problem.
  4. Make sure that you and the NUC are properly grounded at all times when handling the NUC, especially when it's open.
  5. Unplug the NUC power supply. Unplug all periphery devices.
  6. Open the NUC by unscrewing the four screws at the bottom. Set aside the SSD including its case, without unplugging it. The SSD is not screwed into the NUC, in my case. It is only held in place by the four case screws.
  7. Remove the (only one) yellow mainboard jumper where it says, "BIOS_SEC" (further information, see below).
  8. Put the SSD back into its original position (there is only one obvious way to do this without destruction), and reattach the lid, tightening the four screws.
  9. Plug in mouse, keyboard and monitor. Insert the USB stick into the NUC's only one (black) USB 2.0 port (the others are blue and say "SS" on them). Plug power adapter into mains, then connect power adapter with the NUC, giving it power.
  10. Press the power button once, not for three seconds, but just as long as one would normally press it to boot the NUC. No further actions are necessary.
  11. After a few short seconds, the monitor displays a countdown saying that the NUC is going to upgrade the BIOS in recovery mode from version 0064 to version 0076 in 10... 9... 8... 7...
  12. When reaching 0, the upgrading starts automatically. The NUC verbosely displays what it is doing in each step.
  13. After a few minutes, the process is complete. On the monitor, the NUC explains most of  what needs to be done then:
  14. Power off the device by pressing the power button for about 5 seconds.
  15. Disconnect the power supply and all peripherals.
  16. Refit the jumper, usually to position 1+2 (normal operating mode), or 2+3 (The NUC says that this is called "Lockdown mode", whatever that means). Positions 1+2 are what one normally needs.  Positions 1+2 are where the writing "BIOS" is, not where the writing "_SEC" is. In other words, for normal operation, the jumper shorts the two pins near to the rear of the NUC, not those near to the front.
  17. Put the SSD back into its original position, and screw the lid back on.
  18. Connect all peripherals and the power supply.
  19. Start the NUC as usual. Immediately press F2 a couple of times, until the BIOS menu opens. It should now show that BIOS version 0076 is installed.

I hope this helps others.

Good customer support is extremely important, apart from n_scott_pearson's inofficial help, it is missing completely for the NUC.

Shame on Intel for not providing any official information at all, and especially for not providing any manuals or BIOS files any more, already only a few short years after the product was still being sold in huge quantities.
