I have a Dell Latitude 5420, running Win 11 Pro.
Connected to it is a Targus dock190 USB-C / thunderbolt dock (2 HDMI screens, mouse, keyboard). The dock has power delivery so it charges and powers the laptop.
It worked perfectly, then .... Last week, I got a BSOD - critical process error.
Dell came out and replaced the motherboard. I got the same BSOD so they sent a new SSD, which I installed yesterday, together with Win 11 Pro again. When using not connected to the dock, there is no BSOD so I think the SSD resolved that issue.
Here is the problem I have:
- When I connect the dock to the top USB-C (power delivery & thunderbolt) nothing happens - it doesn't charge, peripherals connected to the dock don't work.
- If I plug it in the lower USB-C port (thunderbolt), then external screens work, but laptop wont charge and peripherals connected to the dock don't work.
- Also, when I was installing Windows and it was plugged it the top USB-C with the original Dell power supply, I noticed it never charged either. Then later it seems to charge from this port.
Troubleshooting:
I am sure all drivers are the same as on my "old" motherboard / SSD - Windows has all updates and latest drivers, BIOS is the latest, I installed the DisplayLink Manger, Intel Thunderbolt Control Centre. I set the BIOS for Thunderbolt as I had before.
I am thinking the motherboard I got must have issues (dock works fine with my other laptop).
- Any other advice or things to try before I get Dell out again?
- What about a BIOS recovery or is that not something I should try?
- Reinstall Windows?
Thanks - I am at a loss.

This sounds to me like you are not done dealing with Dell. Have them fix your system.

Hello larrens1,
The fact that the dock works with one USB-C port but not the other suggests there might be an issue with the USB-C ports on the new motherboard. This could be a hardware issue or a configuration problem. Ensure that all drivers, including the Thunderbolt and USB-C drivers, are up to date. Also, check for any firmware updates for both the dock and the laptop. Verify that the BIOS settings for Thunderbolt and USB-C are correctly configured. Sometimes, specific settings need to be enabled for full functionality. Try resetting the Targus dock by pressing and holding the reset button on the dock for at least 10 seconds.
Given the persistent issues even after hardware replacements, it would be best to contact Dell support to seek further assistance under your warranty terms and conditions. They can provide more specific troubleshooting steps or arrange for additional repairs if necessary.
You can reach Dell support through their contact page.
Best regards,
