AC7265 Driver

Hi All,

I have an HP Envy 13 with the AC7265 Wireless module. I continually get  Intel reminders telling me that there is a new driver for my laptop and to update it. However, when I attempt to do this with the Intel software update reminder, I am told that I have a later driver already installed. How can this be? I have never been able to update it ????

Help please

Grasping at straws: What if you disable the device before uninstalling the driver?

Certainly give it a go but I am now convinced that the Intel installation code is checking some locations that have MS data which is not being managed correctly(not clearing/overwriting it). Interesting that the uninstall process is not reseting these locations either.
This inability of the DSA to install the new driver has been going on for many months and today I got another notification to install the new driver!
Thanks for staying with me on this. Your efforts most appreciated!

Even though the driver is being identified as being from Microsoft, the version string would seem to indicate that it's really an Intel driver, and thus the hairy finger is pointing their way. This would not be the first time that Intel screwed up a submission. Unfortunately, while I can tell you this, I am unsure what to do about it - but have another thought: keep uninstalling it until you clear it out completely. Try doing the uninstall-and-reboot a couple of times and see it you can clear it out that way.
Hope this helps,

I will try everything you suggest.

I wonder if selectively re-naming some of the file extensions in the target areas to .old that the installation checks may cause it to burst into life. Do you have any detail about the locations of the files that get sniffed by the install code? I will take a look at the install log file which should give me some clues. Might be a registry entry that needs investigating.

Thanks Thomas, I understand that but the latest HP driver has a bug where the driver fails to load on startup on about 10-20% of the time. Laptop is also out of guarantee so no support from HP.
Last week, I got a strange result when a later Intel driver loaded!!!! Bug now much reduced. Now makes me very suspicious about the quality of the latest Intel driver (since a previous version - 19.51.30.1 has loaded perfectly!)
Got a better performing pc now so I will make do.

Thanks All for your jelp and patience but doesn't look like we will get to the bottom of thid

I looked back through this conversation, and realized that the question of whether the Wireless was actually working never came up. Is it working properly even with this driver that is getting stuck? If so, what kind of throughput are you getting?

While I am at it, are you going to upgrade this laptop to Windows 11?

Hi Scott,
Yes the Wifi works fine giving 60 to 70mbps wich is close to the service parameters. Speed is the same on other devices. Just the occasional no-start.
I cant update to W11 as MS upgrade check tells me that my processor is not compatible.

This is simply not true; I have upgraded quite a few PCs that failed that test. You can definitely upgrade; all it takes is a bit of finagling. Take a look at this post: https://community.intel.com/t5/Mobile-and-Desktop-Processors/Windows-11/m-p/1710597#M85472.

Hi PhilC1,

It sounds like the Intel Driver & Support Assistant (DSA) is mistakenly offering updates for your AC7265 module that aren’t actually applicable. The best approach is to uninstall any current drivers, then install the correct final version based on your module (7265-C or 7265-D). After that, hide any DSA updates for this adapter to prevent repeated prompts.

For those working on laptops and wanting a comfortable workspace while troubleshooting or updating drivers, upgrading window coverings can help reduce glare and improve focus during long work sessions.

Hi tonishatom,
This does not work I am afraid. Any attempted update despite an uninstall, results in the same message saying that a newer driver is already installed. Strange and it seems that HP have modified the driver and caused this fiasco. The laptop is no longer supported. The original HP driver was OK but started to cause a problem. The Wifi module would not power on in about 20% of occasions. I assume that it has become corrupted. Another strange thing was that early this year the driver was updated with a later revision. To this day I do not recall seeing this update being done. Things improved to the pk
Point where it is quite useable and much better than before so I have decided to abort any further attempt to update. No drivers are available from HP now. Thanks for your interest!

Hi,

I just wanted to add that maybe pnputil.exe could be helpful here if you haven't tried it already. It has command line options like /enumerate-drivers and the ability to delete hard to remove drivers as well. Best of luck.

Cheers
