AX201 - Openwrt - Failed to start RT ucode: -110

I've been struggling to get the embedded AX201 on my computer to become functional - after testing out many scenarios with different builds and different firmware the only time I have managed to get firmware to load is shown below.

The computer is running Openwrt, it's an i3-n305, 32Gb. I've tried to run from nvme, emmc, usb. I've tried disabling various bios switches such as bluetooth, trusted computing, etc. I've tried downloading latest drivers from github. I was previously getting the message about no suitable firmware found - error 2. I tried amny different firmware files until I found the one referenced below that seems to get 99% there.

This with the latest and prior stable releases of Openwrt. I have gone back 4 stable releases, same issue. I'm not trying to use the wifi in AP mode, just client mode. My logic says there is something going on in bios - since AX201 has had working code in Openwrt for several years or...... there is a fault with the device.

Hello bruce1066,

I understand that you' re having issues with your AX201. Rest assured that I will do my best to help you. Please share the information below to help with my investigation.

1. What is the Linux distribution are you using?

2. What is the kernel of your OS?

3. Are you having issues on WiFi or Bluetooth or both?

4. Do you remember if this issue happened after a new OS update or Wireless driver update?

5. Is this a laptop or desktop system?

6. Is this the original adapter that came pre-installed in your system, or have you changed/installed a new adapter recently?

I look forward to your response.

Best regards,

Hi Jed,

This is Openwrt. I believe the kernel version is 6.6.73

I also tried 3 other earlier versions - same problem

I'm only trying to use wifi - it's a network router. However, I did check to see if there were errors if I loaded Windows 11. I wanted to isolate if it was a hardware or bios or s/w issue. After downloading the latest Win11 drivers from the Intel website I was getting errors for both Wifi and bluetooth. Yellow triangle, and if I remember right the error messages were something about the device not turning on or powering up. So both Linux and windows with similar problems.

The hardware is a computer with the wifi embedded on the motherboard. It's a Gowin r86s - N305 processor.

Because of the Win11 fails, my logic says this is more likely to be a hardware or a bios issue, vs software/firmware. The hardware is being found, but something prevents it from initializing. I've tried various things like disabling fast boot, disabling secure boot. I'm trying to get an updated bios - if it exists, but want to avoid putting a new variable in the mix - maybe there is a combination of settings - the bios has a LOT of options available - I'm using defaults.

Thanks

Hello bruce1066,

Thank you for sharing all this information.

You mentioned that you also encountered errors for both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when attempting this on Windows. Could you please share those error messages?

Best regards,

Hi Jed,

Sorry, I didn't keep a note of the error message, I only did a quick install to check if the device was being recognized in a different OS. Seems in both openwrt and windows the device is being identified as an ax201. But in both cases the device is failing to start which makes me think it's either a hardware issue or a bios problem. I have tried the latest and the previous release of openwrt. Same error message.

I just did  a clean Debian (bookworm) install. Almost identical error messages. Log attached with errors highlighted. So we have 3 different openwrt builds, 1 Debian build and 1 Windows11 build all failing to start the AX201. The drivers being loaded for Openwrt and Debian are different depending on the version of O/S being loaded. For the Openwrt builds I tried downloading and installing the drivers from github. They loaded, detected the hardware, but same problem. So by a process of elimination I think it's reasonable to assume it's not O/S dependant and it's highly unlikely to be a driver issue - for Windows I did download the Intel driver application and install the latest from Intel.

That brings me back to hardware or bios. Things I have tried so far in bios:

Turning off off fast boot

Disabled bluetooth

Disable sata

Reset to defaults

Set CPU to max non-turbo power

Happy to try other settings, there are many cpu and options open in my AMI bios version.
