(Another) AC 9560 cannot be started - code 10

I see several posts about this AC 9560 "device cannot be started code 10". I am now a victim of this repeatedly. It first happened November last year- I walked out of the room for a minute, came back to no wifi and error in Device Manager. After struggling for a few hours, somehow I got it working again (but I don't know what I did)....

Then just a few weeks ago I was in the middle of copying several large files to another PC when it just quit and no wifi with the exact same error! This time, I went to the laptop manufacturer website, updated the BIOS and installed the OEM laptop drivers. Ok, that worked for a while...

And then just 3 days ago, again doing a large file copy and it quit, no wifi, and the exact same error! So I downloaded the latest official Intel Drivers via WIRED LAN, then uninstalled it in Device Manager (checking the box to uninstall drivers & repeat until no more check mark), then some combination of installing laptop OEM and Intel Drivers, then shutting down, pulling power cord, clean boot it worked fine...

Until today, guess what, yup exact same error and no wifi. This time all I uninstalled it in Device Manager (checking the box to uninstall drivers & repeat until no more check mark), then just shut down, pulled power cord, clean boot and now it's working again. Did not have to re-install any drivers.

Who knows how long until the next fail.

Any ideas on what is going on?

So I just set my laptop down for a few hours of dinner and tv, opened it up and no wifi same error code 10, had to go through another 30 minutes of uninstalling, reinstalling, rebooting, shutting down, unplugging, reinstall, uninstall, round and round.... It's working as I type but who knows an hour from now.

Funny thing is, if I sit and watch the Device Manager, it is continually "refreshing", like the wifi device is cutting out and coming back, cutting out and coming back. I have NEVER seen a Device Manager behave like this.

Looking in the SSU, I see a lot of bad looking stuff, here is just a small snippet:

Hello @tzr916

Thank you for posting on the Intel® communities.

Code 10 errors in Device Manager for Bluetooth or Wireless (Wi-Fi) Devices could be related to many different reasons. Usually, a Code 10 error is a temporary error, generated when Device Manager can't start the hardware device; however, this error is considered a generic message indicating an unspecified problem. However, it is worth mentioning that Software issues don’t always cause a code 10 error. The non-functioning can be attributed to hardware failure too.

Checking the Intel® System Support Utility (Intel® SSU) report, we don't see any entry or reference about the Bluetooth component. Are you having issues with Bluetooth too or only with Wi-Fi? Do you see the Bluetooth entry in Windows® Device Manager? Does it also show any error code or error message? Have you checked if it is enabled in the BIOS?

Since it is very common that there is a close relationship between the Wireless and Bluetooth components and their drivers, and in regards to Code 10 error, what we recommend is to perform a clean install of the Wireless and Bluetooth drivers using the customized drivers from MSI* in order to discard driver/software issues. Please follow these steps:

1- Install all available Windows Updates.

2- Perform Clean Installation of Wireless and Bluetooth Drivers. Download and save to your computer the MSI* drivers:

  • Intel Wireless LAN Driver version 21.30.3.2
  • Intel Bluetooth Driver version 21.30.0.5.

To avoid Windows® update reinstalling a different driver during the process, we recommend first downloading and saving the driver installers in your computer, then disconnect the Internet and follow the steps on the link for a Clean Installation of Wireless and Bluetooth Drivers. Install the Bluetooth driver first, and then the Wireless driver.

Note:

One additional recommendation is to perform a Cold reboot of the system after reinstalling the driver. This means to fully shut down the device and remove all sources of power, including batteries if applicable, then repowering.

If the issue persists, you can repeat the process using the latest generic drivers from Intel:

  1. Intel® Wireless Bluetooth® for Windows® 10 Driver Version 22.30.0
  2. Windows® 10 Wi-Fi Drivers for Intel® Wireless-AC 9560 Version: 22.30.0

If the problem persists after trying all the previous steps (and considering at this point you would have tested with different drivers from MSI* and Intel® and the issue is constantly coming back), the problem could be related to a hardware issue. In that case, our recommendation is to check this further with the laptop manufacturer (OEM) for additional assistance and debugging from their side; and also to review if a reset of the wireless card or a physical inspection is needed. Here is the link to MSI* support for your convenience.

Best regards,

I don't ever use Bluetooth and it's always turned OFF in Settings>Devices>Bluetooth... That may be why you are not seeing it in the SSU report. Bluetooth device is enabled in Device Manager and never shows any problems. But I do notice that when the wifi device dies, there is also another device that fails listed under USB.

I have tried the "clean install" and "cold boot" of the MSI provided drivers:

1. Go to the location of INF file: UWD > Win64 > Drivers.
2. Right-Click on Netwtw04.INF, Netwtw06.ING, and Netwtw08.INF, and select "Install".
3. The driver is installed when "The operation completed successfully." message pop up.

I get the operation successful message for Netwtw04.INF and Netwtw06.ING, but not for Netwtw08.INF.

When the wifi is working and I use Intel Driver & Support Assistant everything looks good. It is odd that it lists the wifi driver is from MS and not the MSI or Intel version:

  • Provider Microsoft
  • Version 21.10.2.2
  • Date 5/13/2019
  • Service Name Netwtw08

Bluetooth driver shows:

  • Provider Intel Corporation
  • Version 22.30.0.4
  • Date 1/22/2021

I just don't understand how it can work for 9 months and suddenly fail, then work for 3 more months and fail... then work for 3 weeks and fail... then work for 3 hours and fail. It's like Windows is trying to reinstall the wifi drivers behind the scenes at random times, despite having the option in Windows Hardware Device Installation Settings turned OFF.

Hello tzr916

Thank you for your response and for the details about Bluetooth status. This behavior (another device failing under USB) could be also related to the Code 10 error previously described.

Regarding your concerns, Windows* may have an inbox Wi-Fi driver that came preinstalled on your system. These types of drivers can't be uninstalled (you won't see the "Delete the driver software for this device" option). If this is the reason why you may have difficulties installing the drivers, you may try to install them by running them as "Administrator". To Run as administrator, right-click over the file you downloaded and select the option to Run as administrator. You may also check with MSI* regarding installation instructions in case they recommend a different install process for the customized drivers.

We do understand your concerns about the issue disappearing and coming back after different periods of time and about the possibility that Windows® tries to reinstall/push a different driver. In those scenarios, the recommendation is to check this further with your OEM as they are the ones that handle all the technical details about this specific system and its custom settings, so they would be the best channel of support for the next steps.

We are checking this thread and we would like to know if you were able to review our previous post or if you were able to check with your OEM about this behavior.

Hello tzr916

We have not heard back from you so we will proceed to close this thread now.

If the problem persists after trying all the previous steps, our recommendation is to check this further with the MSI* support for additional assistance and debugging from their side.

If you need any additional information, please submit a new question as this thread will no longer be monitored.
