BE200 support on Jetson Orin NX

Hello,

I am trying to get Wifi 7 to run on a Jetson Orin NX. Due to the delayed release of newer Linux kernels for Jetpack, there is no support from the kernel out of the box but the iwlwifi backport is needed. Unfortunately, I could not get it to run yet.

Setup:
Hardware: Boson Carrier board with Jetson Orin NX
Software: Jetpack 6.0 with kernel 5.15.136-tegra
OS: Ubuntu 22.04 LTS

Please see also my support ticket from Nvidias side, who referred me here:

https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/t/intel-be200-support-on-jetson-orin-nx/323671

Could someone please confirm that it is possible get it to run, and if yes describe how?

Thanks a lot,

Raphael

Hi raphael3,

I would like to learn more about the issue you're experiencing so I can accurately address your concern. Could you please answer some of the questions below?

  • Is the adapter you're trying to connect the one that came with the system, or are you attempting to upgrade it?
  • Is this issue occurring only with this setup, or do other devices also experience connectivity problems?
  • Do you notice any error messages or warning signs when connecting to the network?
  • I reviewed the steps you tried from NVIDIA support. Besides those, have you attempted any additional steps?
  • Have there been any changes to the system's hardware or software?
  • Could you also run this tool-Intel® System Support Utility for the Linux* Operating System so I can get an overview of your system specifications and configurations?

Answering these questions will help me provide a resolution to your concern and gather insights internally. I look forward to your response.

Best regards,

Hi Randy,

thanks for your response! Let me just answer the questions in order:

  • I am trying to upgrade the system, although also the previous Wifi module didn't come with the system
  • The Wifi network itself is working and other devices in the network are running, but we have multiple Jetsons that are all experiencing the same problems
  • I assume you mean if I get any notification on the computer when I connect; In this case the answer is no, as soon as the wifi module is initialized, it just works.
  • I tried building the backport several times from different releases, and of course I tried installing the backport through apt. None of them worked. For the apt install also the dependencies were wrong (at least not fitting) as they require the Linux generic kernel headers which are obviously not installed for the Nvidia-custom Linux tegra kernel.
  • It is a fresh install of Jetpack 6.0 according to the instructions provided by the supplier of the carrier board
  • I ran the tool that you sent me, but it did not work well as you will see when you check the output

All the best,

Raphael

Hi raphael3,

Thank you for providing this information. I will check it internally and look further into the issue. I will get back to you as soon as possible after reviewing the logs and verifying the compatibility of the driver with your existing kernel. I appreciate your patience while I work on your case.

Hi raphael3,

Here's an update.

Intel wireless firmware and drivers have a dependency on the Linux kernel version. Only specific versions of wireless firmware and drivers are guaranteed to work with particular kernel versions. For the BE200, the minimum kernel version required is 6.5 and above. The Intel wireless drivers are included in the Linux kernel.

To obtain the latest Intel wireless drivers, we recommend installing the latest stable version of the upstream Linux kernel, which is version 6.13, along with firmware version 96. You can find more detailed information in this article Linux* Support for Intel® Wireless Adapters.

You may also check and visit this article for more information: Regulatory Information Regarding Wireless Hardware Installation or Upgrade

Additionally, I suggest checking with your Linux distribution or hardware OEM for further assistance.

Hm, so since the Jetson Orin/Jetpack 6.x does not support kernel 6.5 an above yet, I understand that Intel does not provide any support for our case?

Hi raphael3,

Thank you for your understanding. I wanted to inform you that Intel wireless products offer support for Linux OS on an as-is basis. For the BE200, the minimum kernel version required is 6.5. We recommend checking with your Linux distribution or hardware OEM for further assistance and compatibility details.

Best,
