Intel AX211 (Wi-Fi) is non functional

Hello,

Laptop: LG Gram Style 14 (2023)

I have tried both Windows and Linux (latest drivers) but the wifi is non functional. It worked when my laptop arrived but then it didn't on one random day upon turning the machine on. I don't remember doing anything related to wifi or anything unusual around that time.

Updating the drivers from Intel's website or LG's website did not help with the issue.

Hey there, do you have the latest bios version installed? If your model is 14Z90RS-K.AAW7U1 then the latest bios version is Ver.1.0.0.11

You can check using command prompt by typing: wmic bios get smbiosbiosversion

or

holding down Windows Key + r, then type msinfo32 in the run window. on that first screen you should see Bios/Version.

I don't think that is the bios version, it might be the update installer's version.

You cannot completely remove power from your wlan because it is soldered to your motherboard. But you can remove the antennae (black and gray wires.) Try putting your laptop directly next to your router and check available networks. That'll let you know if it is an antennae issue.

It does look like the installer version, but your bios date is 26-01-2023 and the date for the installer is a December 2023. I  recommend installing the latest version and try installing their wlan drivers. If you need the link, let me know.

I did try installing the latest drivers (from LG's website and Intel's website) multiple times, disabling the network device from Device Manager even, nothing worked out.

Okay, I'll try it without antennas too. Thanks.

Just re-seat antennas, you won't see any networks if you don't have them attached.

This was kind of expected and without antennas it did not work (same error that the hardware reported errors so stopped). It did not work after re-seat as well.

Because it's not working in Linux, I think it's either a hardware or firmware problem.

If updating the bios doesn't fix it, it could be a loose antenna. That was a problem with another Asus laptop I had recently. The wlan card is soldered, but the antennas can be adjusted. I'll try to upload the image from notebookcheck.net

I tried removing power from the wlan card board but it still did not work. I will give your method a try and report back.

One detail I left out in the original post is that I took it to the service center few months ago and they wanted to open the chassis and see which part to replace but somehow wifi started working after they closed and booted up Windows. Doing it at home did not work for me.

Also, I recommend testing using Ubuntu Non-LTS because it works well with secure boot enabled and will have a newer kernel.

AX211 could just be a problematic card, I'll probably pass on buying an lg style.

I tested with Fedora and Arch so it was the latest kernel and I don't think it is a software problem as I can see it.

There were some discussions on the linux kernel bug tracker that this wifi card worked well when plugged into pcie x1 slot rather than x16 slot but apparently I don't have the luxury to try that out or even switch it out for another model.

I met (online) another user of this exact laptop who didn't have the wifi issue so it might be that my particular device is faulty.

You have to disable secure boot with Fedora and I'm pretty sure Arch. I have an Acer Nitro 16 that had display brightness issues with it enabled on Fedora, which doesn't support it out the box.

I wonder if both of you are on the same firmware/bios version. Does Linux even detect the card?

tyrell
Principiante

Nope, Fedora comes with secure boot support OOTB and wifi worked just fine on it when it worked on Windows. Now it doesn't on both. In your case, it might have been an unsigned driver issue.

I wonder if both of you are on the same firmware/bios version

There have not been any updates for that since I bought it so I guess yes.

Does Linux even detect the card?

Yes, and it worked before. The error for linux even in the errored out state shows the correct model.

Moreover, Intel has official support for AX211 on linux.

I suppose giving it back at the service center is my best bet here.

Hello Isaac,

Sorry for not replying earlier, didn't receive a notification for some reason.

No, I couldn't take the laptop to the service centre since the repair person was sick. I was planning on next week but if you could help resolve this without that hassle, I'd very grateful of you.

Thank you.

Also, please let me know the following:

1.      Was the wireless card changed or removed? I mean, is this the original adapter that came pre-installed in your system, or have you changed/installed a new adapter recently?
