Intel Killer Wi-Fi VR Mode Not Working Cannot Connect

I have an Intel Killer Wi-Fi 6E AX1690i 160MHz card on my Alienware x16 R1. I can successfully start "VR Mode" in the Killer App with an SSID and Password. However, I am unable to connect to that SSID or see it broadcasting from any Wi-fi device including my Quest 3 VR headset, my iPhone, or other computers with wi-fi capability.

I have tried adding it as a "Hidden" Wireless network, but I have found no way to connect with it from any device. If I have to configure it as a manual connection, please provide the detailed settings including any wireless security settings (WEP2, WEP3, etc) that I should use to connect to it.

My goal is to connect my Quest 3 headset directly to my laptop so I can be able to play Steam VR and have a direct Wi-fi connection to my laptop from the headset to reduce bandwidth and connectivity issues while playing. You can see that this is the EXACT purpose of the VR mode in Intel's Killer Wi-fi software: https://www.msi.com/blog/killer-doubleShot-pro-x3-and-wireless-vr

I've included all my software versions and information below. Please explain what I can do to resolve this issue and how to properly configure it.

Killer Software Version: 3.1625.211.1

I also ran the Intel System Support Utility, checked to scan "Everything" and have included that report in this post.

Please help me make the most of this amazing feature. I look forward to your response.

Here is the screen shot of the Intel technology I'm trying to use. You can see it is directly developed for the purpose I'm trying to use it for... I just can't find a way to connect to the Wi-fi hotspot it is supposedly creating. I'm not sure if it's even creating one....

Hello studio3d,

I am continuing to work on this issue and need the following information for further analysis:

  • Is the wireless adapter pre-installed in the system, or was it added later?
  • Are you able to connect to Wi-Fi/BT in normal usage scenario and issue happens only when you try setting up VR? Or the system doesn't see any WIFI at all?
  • Have you attempted to install the latest Intel® Killer™ Performance Suite and update the driver using this tool/application?

I hope to hear from you soon.

Best regards,

This laptop came with it factory-installed.

  • Are you able to connect to Wi-Fi/BT in normal usage scenario and issue happens only when you try setting up VR? Or the system doesn't see any WIFI at all?

Wifi and bluetooth work properly. The only function that doesn't work is the VR feature in the Killer Performance app.

Yes. As stated in my original post, I am using Killer Software Version: 3.1625.211.1. I also included the full intel support report in that post so you could see all my system data. I have re-attached it to this post. Please let me know how to resolve this issue.

Hello studio3d,

Thank you for sharing the details I requested. I would like to verify the Killer Software you have, as your system should originally come with the Killer Intelligence Center Application from the Dell driver page. Alternatively, the Intel® Killer™ Performance Suite is standalone software that can be used with Killer wireless if the OEM download page does not offer the Killer software. We strongly recommend using OEM drivers and software, but you can choose the Intel® Killer™ Performance Suite if you wish to install generic drivers from our Download Center.

Since the issue primarily involves setting up your VR, please give me some time to investigate this further internally, and I will provide another update once available.

Best regards,

JeanetteC.

Hello studio3d,

Please proceed with the following steps below:

  1. Uninstall the killer software then reboot the PC.
  2. Check if Windows hotspot is enabled.
  3. Check for Windows updates (make sure there are no pending updates).
  4. Install again the latest Killer software version available in Download Center.
  5. If the issue remains please share a video of the issue while reproducing.

I hope to hear from you soon.

I have followed steps 1-4 and I am using Killer Networking Software version3.1625.211.1 just as before as it is still the latest version. When I click to enable the VR mode, the behavior is the same as when I originally started this post. it says it is enabled. However, it does not create a hotspot like it claims.

If you need me to create a video, what software should I use? I don't have any video screen capture software for recording my screen.

Jeanette,

See the attached video. The VR Hotspot simply doesn't get created. When I do it with my other computer with Killer WiFi VR that works, the hotspot will show up within a few seconds and I can join it with my VR headset. Please advise. This feature needs to work. I'm using it for EXACTLY what it was created for.

Thank you. Please let me know how we can resolve this. This card was designed for this specific purpose and I don't understand how the feature is not working at all.

Hello studio3d,

As per checking internally, it appears that the reason why the VR mode is not functioning is due to the wireless card integration.

Installation or use of Intel® Wireless Adapters is subject to country-specific legal regulations. Some countries require the Intel® Wireless Adapters to be certified with the antenna that is intended to be used together in the system, while some countries require the Intel® Wireless Adapter to be certified at the full system level.

An Intel® Wireless Adapter installed in a system that is being sold on the market doesn't necessarily mean that same wireless adapter can be used or installed in any other systems for the above mentioned reason.

As each country may have different regulatory requirements, before you install/change the Intel® Wireless Adapter in a system, you must contact the system manufacturer to determine if the Intel® Wireless Adapters you plan to install is approved for use in your system and country. You are required to follow the manufacturer's post-approval requirements.

If the manufacturer doesn't have the necessary approvals, the party installing the device is responsible for approvals. Installing adapters in an unauthorized system may be illegal. The end user is not authorized to install the Intel® Wireless Adapters (except the retail products below). Only the manufacturer or its authorized representative can install the adapters.

If you have already performed the integration, it is also important to understand that it may not work due to hardware or software compatibility issues or dependencies.

Intel is a supplier of laptop components and does not manufacture or sell complete laptop systems. Your system manufacturer may have altered the features, incorporated customizations, or made other changes to the software or hardware packaging they provide.

Source: Regulatory Information Regarding Wireless Hardware Installation or Upgrade

Additionally, I highly recommend contacting your system manufacturer support team to check with your computer manufacturer to make sure the adapter works accordingly with their system.

I will now proceed in closing this thread. Should you need assistance in the future, please submit a new question as this thread will no longer be monitored.

Sincerely,

JeanetteC.

UNBELIEVABLE.

This is an integrated adapter sold with a high-end $4,000+ gaming PC from a major manufacturer ALIENWARE / DELL. It is sold with this feature being advertised and I am using it for it's intended purpose.

Your claim is that the card can't work in THE UNITED STATES???

Please reply and verify that you claim this card sold integrated, factory-installed, in a stock gaming PC from DELL COMPUTERS is unable to function in the Untied States of America.

Also please explain in what country the factory-installed Intel Wireless adapter on this laptop is able to function.

Will their be any further support for this ticket? Can you reply to confirm or correct your final answer that the feature simply doesn't work on a stock laptop from Dell Alienware because it's operating in the United States?
