Hardware: Laptop Dell ProMax 16 with Intel Wireless Bluetooth (latest drivers)

Driver: Intel(R) Wireless Bluetooth(R) 24.20.0.3

Target Device: Rockbox Pebble (BT 4.2)

OS: Windows 11

Description: > After resuming from Sleep, the Bluetooth driver fails to properly re-establish the A2DP stream. When trying to play a video (YouTube/Browser), the video freezes because it's waiting for the audio clock from the Bluetooth driver. The only workaround is to Disable/Enable the Intel Bluetooth adapter in Device Manager.

Hello magrebor,

Thank you for posting on Intel Community Forum.

Based on the information you shared, the issue appears to be related to the Bluetooth driver not properly reinitializing the A2DP audio clock reference after the system resumes from sleep. As a result, video players may hang while waiting for audio synchronization.

Please share the additional information below for further investigation.

1. What is the full model of your wireless adapter?

2. When did this issue first start occurring?

3. Does the issue happen only with A2DP audio devices, or also with other Bluetooth devices?

4. What are your current Bluetooth power management settings and sleep settings?

5. Screenshot of Device manager > Bluetooth

I look forward to your response.

Best regards

Hello Jed G., thank you for the professional feedback.

I would like to apologize for the delay in providing this information over the past few days. I wanted to make sure I gathered all the technical details (driver versions, powercfg reports, and downgrade tests) to give you the most accurate picture possible.

Based on my observations, I have gathered the following details:

1. What is the full model of your wireless adapter?

Adapter Model: Intel(R) Wi-Fi 7 BE201 320MHz (Driver 24.20.2.1)

Driver Version: Intel(R) Wireless Bluetooth(R), Driver 24.20.0.3

PC Model: Dell Pro Max 16 MC16250, Microsoft Windows 11 Pro 10.0.26200 build 26200

2. When did this issue first start occurring?

The issue has been present since the first day of use. It is 100% reproducible every time the system resumes from sleep.

3. Does the issue happen only with A2DP audio devices, or also with other Bluetooth devices?

It specifically affects A2DP audio streaming (tested with a Rockbox Pebble speaker). While the device appears "Connected" in Windows, the audio clock reference is lost. I couldn't try with other Bluetooth devices.

4. What are your current Bluetooth power management settings and sleep settings?

Power Plan: Balanced (Windows 11 default).

Modern Standby (S0): I ran powercfg /a and confirmed the system exclusively supports Modern Standby (S0 Low Power Idle). Legacy S3 Sleep is not supported by the firmware.

Crucial Observation: On my previous laptop (S3 Sleep), the Bluetooth speaker would disconnect and turn off after a few minutes of sleep. On this new laptop, the speaker remains connected even while the PC is in sleep mode. It seems the Bluetooth radio stays active but fails to re-initialize the A2DP stream/buffer upon wake, causing the video player (YouTube/Browsers/VLC) to hang indefinitely.

5. Screenshot of Device manager > See attachment

IMPORTANT UPDATE ON TROUBLESHOOTING:
I have further investigated the issue and found the following:

Initial Boot Issue:

The problem is not limited to resuming from sleep. Even upon a fresh cold boot, the speaker performs the "connected" beep and the LED remains solid, but Windows 11 still fails to route audio, causing YouTube and VLC to freeze immediately.

Driver Downgrade Success:

I performed a driver downgrade to version 23.160.0.9. With this specific version, the speaker functions correctly, audio is played, and video playback (YouTube/VLC) works as expected from boot.

This confirms that a regression was introduced in versions newer than 23.160.0.9.

Energy Management & Battery Drain Issue:
I noticed another critical detail (this affected also the 23.160.0.9 version): when the laptop enters Sleep mode, the Bluetooth speaker never disconnects. Since the system only supports Modern Standby (S0), the Bluetooth radio remains active, preventing the speaker from entering its own "Auto-Power Off" state.

This causes the speaker's battery to drain completely while the laptop is supposedly "asleep." On older systems (S3 Sleep), the radio would cut power, allowing the speaker to shut down. The current Intel drivers for the BE201 seem to maintain an active poll/keep-alive signal during S0 that is not properly handled by legacy BT 4.2 devices, leading to both the audio sync freeze upon wake and the battery drain issue.

Thank you again for your assistance and for looking into this.

Best regards

Hi magrebor,

Thank you for taking the time to share this information and your observations. It will certainly be helpful as I continue working toward a resolution. You mentioned that the issue does not occur when using driver version 23.160.0.9, could you please let me know where you downloaded this driver from?

Additionally, please try performing a clean installation of the latest OEM driver version 24.20.0.3. If the issue persists after that, I kindly ask that you also test using the Intel generic driver version 24.20.0 and let me know about the results.

I look forward to your response.

Hi Jed,

I have checked my system's update history as requested. Driver version 23.160.0.9 was automatically installed by Windows Update on December 7, 2025. It seems this was the last stable version for my configuration before the current synchronization issues began with newer releases.

I have completed the clean installation of the driver 24.20.0.3 as requested, and the results are worse than before.

Test Results on Driver 24.20.0.3:

  1. Extreme Audio Degradation: Upon connection, the speaker emits "white" noise/static bursts. The audio quality has dropped significantly (it sounds like a low-bitrate mono radio from the 1960s).

  2. Loss of Volume Control: The Windows volume slider no longer controls the speaker's output.

  3. Profile Mismatch: It appears the driver is failing to initialize the A2DP profile and is defaulting to a corrupted HFP/HSP (Hands-Free) profile, even for standard media playback (YouTube/VLC).

  4. Comparison: This behavior was not present in the older version 23.160.0.9, which handled A2DP correctly.

It seems there is a major regression in how the BE201 Wi-Fi 7 controller manages the Bluetooth stack for legacy BT 4.2 devices in these newer 24.x builds.

Please let me know how you intend to proceed, as the latest official driver has rendered the device unusable for audio.

Best regards

Hi magrebor,

I’m reaching out to share an update following our investigation. Please try performing the steps outlined below.

1. Install the oldest generic driver 23.170.0 and perform clean installation. This is to make sure that this is a driver regression issue.

2. If the issue persists with the oldest driver available, try installing the latest Bluetooth driver 24.30.1.

3. Install all available Windows Updates.

4. Make sure to update the BIOS to latest version 1.12.1

Additionally, could you please try connecting to a different Bluetooth device to see whether the same issue occurs?

I look forward to your response.

Hi @JedG_Intel,

I have an extremely serious update regarding the tests I performed on my Dell system (equipped with the Intel Wi-Fi 7 BE201 chipset) following your last suggestion.

I attempted to install the latest 24.30.1 driver (released just a few days ago, March 24, 2026) to see if the regression was addressed. The results were catastrophic for system stability.

1. Total Audio Stack Failure (A2DP): Immediately after the update and subsequent reboot, I tested two different Bluetooth devices: a Rockbox Pebble speaker and PT-WH005N1 headphones.

  • The issue: Both devices connect successfully, but no audio is produced.

  • The "Mute" Bug: On YouTube (Firefox/Edge), videos automatically pause themselves. If I press "Mute" in the player, the video starts playing (silently). As soon as I "Unmute," the video freezes/pauses again.

  • VLC/Local Media: Video playback continues, but there is absolute silence.

2. System Instability & Recovery Failure: Due to these issues, I attempted a Windows System Restore to return to the stable 23.160.0.9 (Dell OEM) state.

  • The Incident: The 24.30.1 driver seemingly "locked" the system services so severely that the System Restore hung on a black screen for over an hour.

  • Hard Reset: I was forced to perform a hard hardware reset (long press on the power button). Upon rebooting, Windows reported a Critical Failure (Red X) stating: "System Restore did not complete successfully. Files and settings were not changed." It appears the 24.x driver interferes even with core Windows recovery processes.

3. Comparison with Driver 23.160.0.9 (The Only Stable Version): After the failed restore, I performed a manual driver rollback through Device Manager, forcing the system back to version 23.160.0.9.

  • Result: 100% functionality restored. Audio is crystal clear, YouTube works perfectly, and there are no system freezes.

Conclusion: The entire 24.x branch (including the very latest 24.30.1) is fundamentally broken for the BE201 chipset. It is not just an "interoperability" issue with one speaker; it is a systematic failure of the A2DP profile and power management that destabilizes the entire Windows multimedia stack.

Jed, please escalate this to the engineering team immediately. We need a formal acknowledgment that the 24.x branch has a regression for Wi-Fi 7 / BE201 hardware, and we need a fix that doesn't require users to risk system corruption by testing unstable releases.

Looking forward to a technical explanation and a real solution.

Best regards,

magrebor

Hi Jed G,

We have the similar issue, and as described by magrebor:

1. Pairring works, but breaks when using microphone, sound quality is bad
2.  Voice in Teams is not avaible, and the microphone is muted
3.  Downgrade to 23.160.0.9 driver seems to fix it, but windows update tries to update this driver on first reboot

We tested on Jabra headsets, Apple airpods, Apple Airpods Pro.

Any suggestions.

Hi magrebor,

I'd be happy to provide some guidance on this matter. For optimal performance, I would recommend using the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) Bluetooth driver that's specifically designed for your laptop or motherboard. These drivers are tailored to work seamlessly with your particular system, offering enhanced stability, better power management, and improved overall performance compared to generic Intel drivers.

Given these advantages, I would suggest sticking with the stable OEM driver for the best experience. Should you have any additional questions or concerns, I'd recommend reaching out to your device manufacturer, as they'll be best positioned to provide system-specific support.

I will be closing this inquiry. If you need further assistance, please submit a new question, as this thread will no longer be monitored.

Hi KimChristianHansen, for us to address your concern and to avoid any confusion, please create a separate thread and one of the supports will be helping you.

Best regards

@ArchieD_Intel, with all due respect, this is an unacceptable resolution.

While you suggest using the OEM driver (23.160.0.9), Windows Update automatically forces the Intel Generic driver (24.30.1) upon reboot. Intel’s own update delivery system is overriding the OEM stability.

It is now confirmed by multiple users (@KimChristianHansen  and others on the Dell Community) that the 24.x branch is broken. Telling us to "stick with the old driver" is not a solution when your new drivers are causing system-wide instability and recovery failures.

If the 24.x branch is incompatible with the BE201 chipset in real-world scenarios, it should be pulled or patched, not ignored.

I am requesting this thread to remain open until @JedG_Intel  finishes the investigation he promised. We need a driver that works, not a suggestion to stay in 2024 forever.

Best regards,

magrebor

Similar problem with the Bluetooth driver on asus expertbook with Intel wifi 6E AX211 and intel Core Ultra7 258V processor. After sleep/hibernate any video won't play in browser, they auto pause until windows is restarted.  Last working driver without this problem in my case is BT-24.10.0-64UWD-Win10-Win11.exe
