Laptop wifi speed being throttled

Hey all,

So my wife's laptop uses a Killer(R) Wi-Fi 6 AX1650i 160MHz Wireless Network Adapter (201NGW) with an 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-11800H @ 2.30GHz processor. until a few days ago her wifi speeds were comparable with all other devices on my network (~90Mbps down 25 up idle ping of ~25). Now it struggles to get 4.5Mbps in both directions and has a ping of 200 .

I have tried:

  • resetting modem and router

  • resetting all network settings

  • reinstalling drivers

  • ensuring drivers are fully up to date

  • disabling firewalls

  • disabling any anti-virus

  • system restore point to 2 days ago with the windows update
  • using command prompt to flush DNS settings, renew IP, reset winsock etc.

Only two things have made any difference; resetting the network adapter fixes the issue completely for anywhere from 1 min to 10min.  Then it goes back to the way it was. the other was doing the modem/router reset has made it so I get ~35 down and still only 4 up with a ping of 155. So far this seems pretty stable (been an hour) but still isn't getting back up to the full speeds. It did not however persist though a restart of the laptop.

The thing that first alerted me to this problem is I host a world on a game called Enshrouded. I host it on my desktop and everyone else can connect to it and play no problem. However when she tries to connect on the laptop it fails and says "lost connection to server". And the modem reset has not helped this issue. the network adapter reset does but eventually it will get kicked out (again in the 1min to 10 min time frame). Even though the internet connection seemed better when I tried to connect to the world it still gave the same error.

Normally I can deal with internet connection issues but I seem to be way out of my depth here. Any ideas? If not I plan to take it to Canada Computers to see if they can fix it.

If you need any other information about the laptop or anything just let me know. I probably forgot something important

Thanks in advance for your time and effort in helping me and my wife go back to playing games together

Hello Casius,

Thank you for posting in Intel community Forum.

For me to further investigate this issue, please help provide the following details:

  1. What is the complete brand and model of the laptop?
  2. Was it working fine before?
  3. If yes, what was the last change made in the system before the issue started?
  4. Did you manually install the AX1650i as an upgrade or this is embedded on the system?
  5. Have you already tried connecting to other Wi-Fi modem?

If you have questions, please let us know. Thank you.
