Hello Intel Wi-Fi team,
I recently bought a Lenovo laptop and I’m running Ubuntu 22.04 for software development. The internal Intel Wi-Fi (AX211) is detected, but the driver can’t find suitable firmware on 22.04. The same hardware works perfectly on Ubuntu 24.04.
Key details (from 22.04):
uname -r: <paste here>
lspci -nnk | grep -A3 -i network: <paste here>
full dmesg snippet: <paste here>
dmesg shows:
iwlwifi 0000:00:14.3: Detected crf-id 0x400410, cnv-id 0x80930, PCI dev 7740/0094, rev=0x460 (also 0x461 on 24.04)
iwlwifi ...: minimum version required: iwlwifi-bz-a0-gf-a0-80
iwlwifi ...: maximum version supported: iwlwifi-bz-a0-gf-a0-86
iwlwifi ...: no suitable firmware foundOn 24.04 live session the device is detected as “Intel(R) Wi-Fi 6E AX211 160MHz” and loads:
loaded firmware version 96.x bz-b0-gf-a0-96.ucode
What we tried (brief):
linux-firmware on 22.04 (jammy and newer noble snapshots): still no iwlwifi-bz-a0-gf-a0-8[0..6].ucode present.
Extracting from Ubuntu 24.04 ISO/USB: only bz-b0-gf-a0-92/94/96.ucode(.zst) and .pnvm exist; no bz-a0-gf-a0 files.
Manual copy & symlink test: symlinked bz-a0-gf-a0-8[0..6].ucode → bz-b0-gf-a0-96.ucode. Driver then reports:
Driver unable to support your firmware API. Driver supports v86, firmware is v96.
(So the kernel found the file, but firmware branch/API doesn’t match.)HWE kernel + package updates on 22.04 and pulling newer linux-firmware from the archive: still no bz-a0-gf-a0 ucode available publicly.
Searched kernel.org/linux-firmware and GitHub mirrors: unable to locate iwlwifi-bz-a0-gf-a0-8[0..6].ucode or associated pnvm.
Request:
Could you please provide (or point us to) the iwlwifi-bz-a0-gf-a0-80…86.ucode (and any required .pnvm) for AX211, or an official patch/backport path that enables this device on Ubuntu 22.04?
Our toolchain is locked to 22.04, so upgrading the OS is not an option right now. A firmware drop or guidance for a 22.04-compatible branch would be hugely appreciated.
Happy to test and report results. I can share full logs if needed
Thank you for your help and for your work on iwlwifi!

Hello Darshan916,
Thank you for posting on Intel Community Forum.
To effectively address your concern, kindly share the information below.
1. What is the full model of the laptop? If possible, kindly share the link to it.
2. Is this the original adapter that came pre-installed in your system, or have you changed/installed a new adapter recently?
3. What kernel version are you currently running?
4. Is there a particular reason why you need to stay on 22.04 instead of upgrading to 24.04?
I look forward to your response.
Best regards

Hello Darshan916,
I'm getting back in touch to give you an update following our investigation.
To further troubleshoot the issue, I would like for you to try using the stable kernel version, which can be accessed via The Linux Kernel Archives. Additionally, please download the latest wireless driver from our official website at Intel® Wireless Wi-Fi Drivers for Linux*. It is possible that recent updates have introduced compatibility issues with your current setup, and updating both components may help resolve the problem.
If you have any questions, please let me know.
Best regards

For me when I updated to Ubuntu 24.04LTS it actually works! However I wanted to work only with ubuntu 22.04LTS for now for some software dependencies.
For the easy fix I bought wifi USB stick and it work! Currently I'm sticking with this for temporary solution. Perhaps I have a plans to upgrade 24.04LTS in coming days so the wifi driver will works anyway with 24.04LTS. thanks for your support throughout.
Thanks
Darshan
