Unstable AX200 connection in Ubuntu 20.04

Jump to solution

Hi, my gigabyte aorus 15g laptop equipped with Intel AX200 running on Ubuntu 20.04 often lose Wifi Connection every 2~6 hours. The wifi can not be automatically reconnected unless I switch the wifi off and on and then everything goes back normal again, but the problem persists after a few hours. The error message I try to reconnect to the wifi is "Activation of network connection failed".

I'm pretty sure this is not a hardware issue, since this laptop running on Windows 10 has no issues at all, but the problem occurs once I install the Ubuntu 20.04 (Erase Windows and install the Ubuntu 20.04). The Ubuntu has no other issues except for occasionally wifi disconnecting.

Here is my driver name and version by running "lspci" command:

03:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Wi-Fi 6 AX200 (rev 1a)  (Version: 1a)

My Ubuntu and kernel version:

Ubuntu 20.04,  Kernel: 5.4.0-42-generic

I think it might be some driver issues of AX200 in ubuntu 20.04. Thanks if you can look into it and please ask if you need more infos.

DavidHuang, Thank you for posting in the Intel® Communities Support.

In order for us to provide the most accurate assistance, we just wanted to confirm a few details about your system:

Which is the specific model of the laptop? There are 5 different models in there.

https://www.gigabyte.com/us/Laptop/AORUS-15G--Intel-10th-Gen/support#support-childModelsMenu

What is the model of the Router?

Is this a new computer?

Was it working fine before with Ubuntu?

Besides changing the OS, did you make any recent hardware/software changes?

The wireless card, did you purchased it separately or did it came installed on the computer?

Does the problem happen at home or work environment?

Any questions, please let me know.

Regards,

Albert R.

Hi,

Which is the specific model of the laptop? There are 5 different models in there:

the model is AORUS 15G YB.

What is the model of the Router?

It's a AC Plus Router from Singtel, you can learn more about it here , however I don't think the issue is related to router, since after disconnecting, any wifi can't be connected unless I restart the wifi.

Is this a new computer?

I bought it two months ago.

Was it working fine before with Ubuntu?

Yes, it's working fine.

Besides changing the OS, did you make any recent hardware/software changes?

No changes.

The wireless card, did you purchased it separately or did it came installed on the computer?

It came installed on the computer.

Does the problem happen at home or work environment?

It happen at home.

I tried to reinstall the AX200 driver on Ubuntu under this article . And I also tried to disable the wireless power saving mode on Ubuntu. It looks like after trying these 2 methods, the problem doesn't occur again(I fixed it two days ago). I will update you if I encounter the same problem again, I think the problem might occur with the AX200 on default Ubuntu 20.04. Thanks.

DavidHuang, Thank you very much for providing that information.

Perfect, excellent, it is great to hear that it seems that after trying those two methods the problem with the Wireless connection got fixed.

Go ahead and keep monitoring the behavior of the computer and once you get the chance, please let us know the results to confirm if that is the case.

DavidHuang, I just received an update on this matter.

Just to confirm:

-Have you tried installing the latest firmware and still seen the connection issue? e.g. "iwlwifi-cc-*ucode" firmware files are available for AX200 in the package linux-firmware-20200817.tar.gz

-Did you install dual-boot Windows 10 and Ubuntu on your system? If so, please disable the 'Fast Startup' option on Windows 10. Details can be found at https://wireless.wiki.kernel.org/en/users/drivers/iwlwifi, please refer to "About dual-boot with Windows and "fast-boot" enabled"

-The log shows he used 'iwiwifi', but it should be 'iwlwifi'

When the issue occurs, please generate the logs with correct module 'iwlwifi'

-Please proceed the debug Step 5, it is missing from the previous log:

#dmesg | grep ASSERT

If output is empty, then please do

#dmesg > dmesg.log

#sudo trace-cmd record -e iwlwifi

And collect the dmesg.log and the trace.dat
