API for event counting

Is there a VTune API for event counting? I'd like to programmatically setup the events that I'd like tracked from my application and analyze the data from within the applicationat specific points in the code. I've used the interface in VtuneAPI.h, but it seems to be specific to generating a sampe file for VTune to analyze.

That is the only API available. Sorry, but there is nothing similar to what you describe.
