Balancing my work and my life

Hi all! Becky again! In today’s society we always seem to be in a hurry, and there never seems to be enough hours in the day to do all the things we want (or need) to do! Our lives are constantly changing, whether it’s changes within our personal lives, with friends or families for example, or whether we are taking on new challenges or more variety in our jobs. With all of this change, there is often the challenge of being able to juggle the demands of home and work. So, how do you balance your work and personal life?

Some people are more successful at this than others; however, it is something that we should all try to do effectively. As the saying goes “You should work to live, not live to work!” Intel encourage all employees to have work life balance and is committed to making it easier for you to make the most of both worlds In fact, there is so much support around doing this and such a vast amount of information and support, it can be difficult to know how or where to start!

For me personally, I have worked for Intel in the UK for nearly 10 years and I always try to leave the office on time, as my evenings are important to me as that is when I go to the gym or meet up with friends. I also never work on weekends! I prioritise my workload so that I know what must get done that day and also know what can wait until tomorrow. Of course, working in a global company means I might have to attend a meeting slightly outside of my standard hours as well. But then I am also able to get this time back. For example if I come in early, I may leave early. I also know that if my workload was to get to a point where it was not manageable within working hours, I would raise this and know that support would be there from my manager and team members.

Another example of support I receive is that I am able to work from home one day a week. Within our household we only have 1 car, and my husband needs it on Fridays, therefore as long as there is not a business need for me to actually be in the office, I am able to work from home on Fridays which saves me taxi fares!

Remember, what works for someone else, may not work for you, our situations are all different! That’s why there are number of options available to help you manage life and work at Intel, such as alternative work schedules to work around school hours, working from home, telecommuting, to name just a few! We are encouraged to talk to our manager, and come to an agreement based on our own individual circumstance. It would be great to see your thoughts and ideas on how to balance your work and your personal life!
