Hi CarlM,
Welcome to the Intel® Embedded Community!
The wireless module or access point your referring to is a PCIe mini card that has infrastructure mode. Is that right?
Here is a link of the list of wireless products offered by Intel. Open the product brief their you can compare each specifications and features for different devices.

Hi CarlM,
Infrastructure mode is one principle you see on routers.
Basically a router is a example of a network device that is running as infrastructure mode.
Is this example similar to what you are referring to?
Or you want to know what WLAN module can work for this board to connect to wireless internet?

Leon

Leon,
Bare with me while I try to explain.
Im looking too make something more like an ad hoc network where one device can communicate with a few other specificaly identified device without a router or AP in an enviroment where there is no wireless network available.
I want to create a wireless local network of sorts independent and separate from the internet or any available wifi network.
Thank you for your help,
Carl

Leon,
I should be clear. I need either a wireless moduels that suport an adhoc type conection with no access point -or- a wireless moduel that can act like an access point.

Hi CarlM,
In that case you are looking at Infrastructure and ad hoc (peer-to-peer).
If you look this document below, it shows the architecture has both Infrastructure and ad hoc (peer-to-peer).
https://www-ssl.intel.com/content/www/us/en/processors/centrino/centrino-advanced-n-6200-brief.html Intel® Centrino® Advanced-N 6200 Product Brief
You can also look at the other devices to see what architecture they have.
In addition, do you have any operating system in preference?

Leon

Leon,
It works with Ubuntu Linux, it should work with Debian, right? I havent decided on a distribution yet. Are there limitations when used with linux?
Is there an ac version?
Good work,
Carl

Hello CarlM,
My name is Adam Martinak and I'm the account manager that covers South Texas and Louisiana at Intel. The use case for the independent network you are trying to create, I assume would be for equipment in the field? If that is the case, what type of devices need to be connected?
I encourage you to connect with me on LinkedIn and I would be very interested to discuss your project and how I can help.

Hi CarlM,
I'm with the NUC support team. If you haven't already done so, please see the list of validated wireless adapter for the NUC model you have - http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/sb/CS-034717.htm Intel® NUC Boards and Kits — Tested Peripherals. You should be able to check the specs for any of the ones listed to see if they support what you're looking for.
Regards,
Lois

Dear CarlM,
I have an NUC named DE3815TYKE, and I installed atheros ar5b225 300M+BT4.0, two in one half-height mini-PCIe chip.
Limited with the CPU Atom E3815 @ 1.46GHz, it shows bad performance with Desktop OS like Win8/8.1 and Ubuntu.
I have the same idea that this NUC can works as AP, but i have not found suitable OS and application. Hope to get ur suggestions, tks!!!

Dear CarlM,
Actualy I was trying to install openWRT in it, but i know little about this linux.
BTW, I am considering to compile Android for it, aim at using the single 1.5G CPU and supporting AP with network adapter.
So, the OS seems the biggest problem:(

Intel sent me this late last week. I haven't tried it yet but it looks promising. http://seravo.fi/2014/create-wireless-access-point-hostapd Turn any computer into a wireless access point with Hostapd - Seravo
I will install an OS on my machine later this week.

Dear Carl,
Tks so much for this link. I will try it on my Ubuntu in NUC.
I am learning how to use FreeNAS, which seems like an another good choice.
Keep in touch:)
