Use of oscillator in place of the crystal for X550-AT2

Hi,

Most Intel ethernet controllers supports the use of an oscillator in place of a crystal as clock source. This includes the XL710 10GbE controller.

The datasheet for the X550 does not mention this option. Can an oscillator be used? Any guidance would be appreciated!

Hello, Terje:

Thank you for contacting Intel Embedded Community.

You can use the device that you have mentioned, just assure it meets the electrical parameters stated in the Crystal requirements in section 12.6, on page 1096 of the https://www.intel.com/content/dam/www/public/us/en/documents/datasheets/ethernet-x550-datasheet.pdf Intel(R) Ethernet Controller X550 Datasheet document # 333369. You can confirm this information and more details in the Checklist X550-AT2 tab, specifically in the Connect clock signals to external rows of the https://cdrdv2.intel.com/v1/dl/getContent/557651 Intel(R) X550-AT2 10 GbE Controller [Sageville] Design In Checklist document # 557651.

We hope that this information may help you.

Best regards,
