Internet keeps dropping, Win10

Hi,

My internet keeps dropping every 10 minutes or so, it's a new computer with an ASRock B250M Pro4 motherboard, and a wired ethernet connection. My phone does not have any problems with the same router, neither did my previous computer.

I've read a bunch of solutions around the web, the main one is to go to Device Manager -> the network adapter -> Properties -> Power Management, and then turn off the "Allow the computer to save power" option.

This option wasn't there, and my settings looked something like this http://i.imgur.com/PBgPCSs.png http://i.imgur.com/PBgPCSs.png which I assume is because the driver is newer than when that solution was proposed. I turned all the options in this dialog off, and it made no difference. I

I then installed several different versions of the drivers on the intel site, some with the "save power" option, and none of them stopped the issue from occurring.

What are my next steps?

Hi neandertal,

Thank you for posting in Wired Ethernet Communities.

Looking at the specs of your motherboard, it comes with I219-V ethernet controller. We have customer in other thread who also encountered disconnection problem and was fixed by system manufacturer coming up with a utility.

Sharing the link below for reference:

https://communities.intel.com/thread/105862?start=15&tstart=0 https://communities.intel.com/thread/105862?start=15&tstart=0

I'd suggest you to contact Asrock support to check if other similar board user also experiences the same issue and possible workaround.

Additional isolation if you have spare computer or other router, you can connect the Asrock system LAN to the spare computer or other router to check if you would encounter the LAN drop issue.

Hope this helps.

regards,

Vince

Hi neandertal,

We'd like to check if you still need additional assistance regarding your i219-V Ethernet controller.

Hi Vince appreciate the replies, apologies I was away for a few days.

I'm still having the problem, I will lodge a support query with ASrock. The common culprit I'm seeing with the people in that thread is virtualization/VPN software but that could be a total red herring.

Hi Vince,

A while since I made the thread but the issue persists.

I contacted ASRock, they got me to reinstall LAN drivers again and upgraded the mobo bios but after that just said go to my local computer shop (eye roll). I also used the windows Network Reset feature and that didn't help. Not sure what I should do to troubleshoot further.

In the other thread I saw the Intel System Support Utility, so here are the details for my PC: https://pastebin.com/raw/S7fjDV24 https://pastebin.com/raw/S7fjDV24

Hi neandertal, looking at the log generated by System Support Utility, you can try to disable the following i219-V advanced settings:

ReduceSpeedOnPowerDown:Reduce Speed On Power Down EEELinkAdvertisement:Energy Efficient Ethernet IPChecksumOffloadIPv4:IPv4 Checksum Offload TCPChecksumoffloadIPv4 TCPChecksumoffloadIPv6 UDPChecksumoffloadIPv4 UDPChecksumoffloadIPv6In your initial post, you mentioned the issue doesn't appear in your previous computer, can you share the network adapter model on that system? regards, Vince

Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller, info for that PC https://ybin.me/p/47d178acace81807# ZRNxFGtiwD2TuLy6M8VKc4hbZl+XZ9PbyKNLpPDbTFU= here. And tethering through my phone works.

I'm not sure how to turn off those particular options but there's lots of things I can try turn off in this dialog:

If those are the relevant ones then I'll test it out a bit.

Turning off all the checkboxes in the power management options didn't help. I see some similarly named options in the advanced dialog but not exactly, are those options you mentioned somewhere else?

Thanks neandertal for sharing the information, comparing the settings of your Realtek vs I219-V, The following options were not present in Realtek LAN.

1. Energy Efficient Ethernet

2. RSS

Please try to disable them.

Vince

Found those options and disabled them, unfortunately didn't seem to make a difference.

Hi neandertal, sad to know that the options didn't help. Pleas refer to additional suggestions below:

1. Change the "Receive Buffers" from "256" to "512"

2. Change the "Transmit Buffers" from "512" to "128"

These settings can be found in the Advanced properties of I219-V in Device Manager.

3. Update to latest driver version 12.15.25.6

Download link - https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25016/Intel-Network-Adapter-Driver-for-Windows-10-

Other isolation you may want to consider is connecting the I219-V to different network and check if you would encounter the same internet problem.

Hope this help.

regards,

Vince

Hi Vince thanks for the reply,

I've updated to the new driver and tried those configurations, no luck. The reason I hadn't replied was I haven't been able to find a way to get my computer to a different network yet.

Hi neandertal, thanks for your update, if you were able to test your I219-V on different network, please post the result in this thread.

I've tried to duplicate your issue in my lab using I219-V, unfortunately, it's not successful. The reason might be due to different environment (motherboard and network).

Vince

Hi Vince I realise it's been a long time since I posted but my issue persists. This weekend I finally got around to taking to somewhere with a different router and the issue did not occur.

There are several other computers in the house that work fine, I don't know why this one is having trouble with what I assume is the router. Any help appreciated for further diagnostic tools or ideas is appreciated.

HI neandertal,

Thank you for the update. Can you share what is the original router brand and model you tried that was having issue, what is the current driver version you have?

Thanks,

Sharon

Hi neardertal,

Thank you for the information. Just to double check have you contact the board vendor to check on the hardware aspect too? Thanks.
