Unable to update firmware on X710-DA2: "Update not available" (8.15->9.20)

Hi Support Team

I have a case similar to
https://community.intel.com/t5/Ethernet-Products/Unable-to-update-firmware-on-X710-DA2-quot-Update-not-available/td-p/335383
and
https://community.intel.com/t5/Ethernet-Products/Cannot-update-X710-NVM-firmware/m-p/1435198

I'm trying to update my X710-DA2 to the current FW, but unfortunately I only get "Update not available"

Like in the cases referenced above I have the problem that I am faced with several (10) X710-DA2 entries in nvmupdate.cfg that reference the XL710DA2 card.

To which entry should I add the current ETRACKID (800096c1) to the end of the REPLACES list?

I assume the first one is for some intermediate step.

root@r530:/tmp/700Series/Linux_x64_9.20# grep X710DA2 nvmupdate.cfg
NVM IMAGE: X710DA2_4p42_CFGID7p2_OEMGEN.bin
NVM IMAGE: X710DA2_9p20_CFGID7p2_OEMGEN.bin
NVM IMAGE: X710DA2_9p20_CFGID7p2_OEMGEN_OO.bin
NVM IMAGE: X710DA2OCP_9p20_CFGID7p2_RETAIL.bin
NVM IMAGE: X710DA2OCP3_9p20_CFGID7p2_OEMGEN_OO.bin
NVM IMAGE: X710DA2_9p20_CFGID7p2_J51959_Retail_8M.bin
NVM IMAGE: X710DA2_9p20_CFGID7p2_J83813_OEMGEN_8M_Type1.bin
NVM IMAGE: X710DA2_9p20_CFGID7p2_OEMGEN_K97470.bin
NVM IMAGE: X710DA2OCP3_9p20_CFGID7p2_OEMGEN_K97342.bin

I would guess it is
NVM IMAGE: X710DA2_9p20_CFGID7p2_OEMGEN.bin
but I don't want to brick the card.

So can you please help me out here?

Thank you in advance.

Kind regards

Michael Neuffer

Hi @Alsoanunhappycustomer,

Thank you for posting in Intel Ethernet Communities.

1) Please share the PBA of the adapter. You may refer to the link below on where to find the PBA number. Providing photos of the adapter focusing on the markings (white sticker) found on the physical card will be highly appreciated for us to double check on it. The PBA consists 6-3 digit number located at the last part of the serial number. This would help us identify if you are using an Original Equipment Manufacturer(OEM) or retail version of Intel Ethernet Adapter.

Identify Your Intel® Network Adapter Model Using PBA Number

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000007022/network-and-i-o/ethernet-products.html

2) What is the model of your computer/system/board?

3) What is the operating system (OS) in your system and build version?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,

Hi @Alsoanunhappycustomer,

Thank you for the information.

May I seek your advise if you are using Intel or Dell Drivers? Kindly provide the link you got the driver.

Thank you.

Hi BY

I am using the drivers that are part of the standard Linux / Debian kernel. Which is currently:

Linux r530 6.1.0-9-amd64 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Debian 6.1.27-1 (2023-05-08) x86_64 GNU/Linux

In order to update the cards FW I tried the Livecycle Manager from the r530 iDRAC

which downloads the Network_Firmware_9NPPG_WN64_22.0.9_A00.EXE, but fails to install with the following message:

JCP038: Unable to run the (installation or configuration) job JID_865013156682 because Unable to complete the firmware update operation because the specified firmware image is for a component that is not in the target system inventory..

and also tried the Intel Firmware package 700Series_NVMUpdatePackage_v9_20.zip from

https://www.intel.de/content/www/de/de/download/18190/non-volatile-memory-nvm-update-utility-for-intel-ethernet-network-adapter-700-series.html

out of which I extract the Linux tar

Which one is the correct one? Or is there some entirely different way to do it that I am overlooking?

Hi @Alsoanunhappycustomer,

Thank you for the clarification.

Considering that "firmware-version: 8.15 0x800096c1 20.0.17" and the NIC label are given above, this reveals that the adapter is a Dell one running Dell FW 20.0.17, meaning with Dell configuration.

The adapter will probably become ineffective (useless) if you try to update it with the Intel FW (such as add the ETrackID to the nvmupdate.cfg file).

According to our investigation for your server model: PowerEdge R530 by Dell, we could find an Intel NIC Family Version 22.0.0 Firmware for X710, XXV710, and XL710 adapters on Dell Support Site: https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-sg/product-support/product/poweredge-r530/drivers

May I suggest to contact Dell support to get an updated NVM, because Dell Driver & Firmware Support may require a service tag of the server in order to get accurate Firmware.

Thank you.

This is because the card got updated ONCE by the r530's Livecycle Controller which installed a Dell provided package.

Now it doesn't recognize it anymore.

The adapter will probably become ineffective (useless) if you try to update it with the Intel FW (such as add the ETrackID to the nvmupdate.cfg file).

It managed it to update it in the Dell direction once successfully. Why should it not be possible to do it back to a default Intel one?

According to our investigation for your server model: PowerEdge R530 by Dell, we could find an Intel NIC Family Version 22.0.0 Firmware for X710, XXV710, and XL710 adapters on Dell Support Site: https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-sg/product-support/product/poweredge-r530/drivers

This is the Dell driver I referenced/linked to in my previous post. This is the one that fails to install

May I suggest to contact Dell support to get an updated NVM, because Dell Driver & Firmware Support may require a service tag of the server in order to get accurate Firmware.

Unfortunately that won't work since my r530 is out of Dell support since 2020.... So they probably won't help.

When I extract the Dell package (Network_Firmware_9NPPG_LN_22.0.9_A00.BIN), it very much looks like a stripped down and thenrepackaged 700Series_NVMUpdatePackage_v9_20_Linux.tar.gz archive.

So can you please help me?

Thank you in advance.

Kind regards

Hi @Alsoanunhappycustomer,

After further validation, we concluded this is a Dell NIC, unfortunately Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) cards cannot have Intel NVM put on them. The image for that card is not included in the NVMUpdate tool from Intel, Dell publishes that image.

The image shows Dell P/N: Y5M7N. The Dell support should be able to look it up from the Dell P/N and support accordingly.

I hope this clarifies your concern.

Hi @Alsoanunhappycustomer,

We appreciate your patience.

We searched far and wide for a solution to assist you, but regrettably, DELL NVM is required. Because the Dell package is unfamiliar to Intel representative, we unable to offer the best advice regarding why the package preferred a simplified and then newly packaged 700Series_NVMUpdatePackage_v9_20_Linux.tar.gz archive. We strongly hope you may get in touch with Dell to inquire about their expertise regarding the dell driver package.

Hi @Alsoanunhappycustomer,

Please be informed that we will now close this request since it requires further assistance from Dell Technical Support because of Dell NVM and other community members may assist.

Just feel free to post a new question if you may have any other inquiry in the future as this thread will no longer be monitored.
