X540 Operating Temperature

Hi,

We are interested to use the X540 Twinville Dual Port 10GbE MAC/PHY in our application. The marketing data sheet

http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/embedded/products/networking/ethernet-controllers-phys-brochure.html Intel® Ethernet Controllers and PHYs

lists the operating temperature at 0-55C. Yet the data sheet

http://www.intel.com/content/dam/www/public/us/en/documents/datasheets/ethernet-x540-datasheet.pdf http://www.intel.com/content/dam/www/public/us/en/documents/datasheets/ethernet-x540-datasheet.pdf

on pg 1188 lists a maximum case temperature of Tcase Max = 107C.

Please elaborate on the difference and meaning between these two figures. We need the 0-70C temperature range if we are to use this part.

Thank you.

Hi Pete42,

The operating temperature of X540-T2 is 0-55 C as stated in the marketing data sheets.

http://www.intel.com/content/dam/www/public/us/en/documents/brochures/intel-ethernet-controller-selector-guide.pdf http://www.intel.com/content/dam/www/public/us/en/documents/brochures/intel-ethernet-controller-selector-guide.pdf

The 0-107C refers to Tcase temperature which is a temperature measurement using a thermocouple embedded in the center of the heat spreader.

You may refer to this website about Tcase temperature: http://www.intel.com/support/processors/sb/CS-033342.htm http://www.intel.com/support/processors/sb/CS-033342.htm

WB,

Thank you for the information. Please clarify

"The 0-107C refers to Tcase temperature which is a temperature measurement using a thermocouple embedded in the center of the heat spreader."

implying the X540 has an Integrated Heat Spreader (IHS). Yet from the data sheet pg 1187

here it says "(but IHS is not present for the X540)".

So the X540 does not have an Integrated Heat Spreader?

Also, please confirm that with no heat sink or airflow, maximum ambient temperature is 55C. I understand Tcase will be 107C if the ambient reaches 55C (no heat sink or airflow).

Thanks,

Pete42

Hi Pete42,

Further checking the X540 does not have Integrated Heat Spreader (IHS). Hope this clarifies.

thanks,

See table 14-3 - "X540 Expected Tcase and Tj (°C) for 11.43 mm High Heat Sink at 12.5 W (JEDEC Card)".

0-70° C is possible when using enough airflow (300 LFM) and the proper thermal solution. The 0-55°C is published specification for 200 LFM (which is the marketing target for LFM for this Intel Ethernet silicon).
