setup for TSE without MAC (just PCS+PMA)

For quite some time, I have been able to use the Altera triple-speed ethernet (TSE) IP without having to perform any special configuration to get it to work. In all cases, I have been using the MAC+PCS+PMA configured for LVDS I/Os. 

 

Now I have an application where I want to use the TSE without the MAC -- just PCS+PMA configured for LVDS. (SIDE NOTE: In fact, I am using the exact same board I was using for applications where I did include the MAC in the TSE.) This configuration doesn't seem to work right out of the box, i.e., without any register setup. Does anyone have any experience with this that might know if any register setup to get it to work and what that setup might be?
