the DE0 is quite affordable compared to the DE1 and the others and it appears to be quite powerful. Am i missing something? Is it the lack of peripherals that explains the price difference?

Thank you and sorry for being so short; I'm on my cellphone

It depends on what you want to do. You can compare for yourself what features each board has. But you are right: the DE0 is definitly a nice board with lots of possibilities and fair amount of logic element. Most projects will fit in it. The board does not have an audio codec, but in fact using a PWM signal you can generate audio on the DE0 as well.
