A380 & Ubuntu - xorg is using the frame buffer driver

I'm trying Ubuntu 22.04 and 24.04, but 3D performance is terrible and I can't get 60 fps at the 3840x2160 resolution.  I'm trying to use the inbox drivers.

Looking at Xorg.0.log, it looks like X isn't detecting the GPU and falls back to fbdev.  Do I need to force the right driver with an xorg.conf file?  I'm also concerned that the intel_drv.so file is from Feb 2022, even on 24.04.  I would have expected an update or two in the past 2 years.

Thanks,

Mark

Hello Pyite,

Thank you for posting in our Intel communities.

In order for me to isolate the issue and provide the appropriate solution, kindly provide the following information:

  • Was the system working fine before?
  • What are your system model and graphics?
  • Are you using software to check or test your 3D performance? If yes, what software are you using?
  • If you have updated your graphics driver, please provide the link to where you got it.
  • Please provide us with your SSU, as it would really help us if we could get more information about your system.

Kindly do the following:

1. Download the Intel® System Support Utility and save the application to your system.

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/download/18377/intel-system-support-utility-for-windows.html

2. Open the application, tick Everything, and click Scan to see system and device information. The Intel® System Support Utility defaults to the Summary View on the output screen following the scan. Click the menu where it says summary to change to Detailed View.

3. To save your scan, click Next and click Save. You can save the file to any accessible location on your computer.

4. Attach the text file here.

Thank you, and have a great day!

Best regards,

Thanks for the kind reply.  My system is a SuperMicro X11SPL-F with a Xeon Gold 6154 CPU with Ubuntu 22.04 and 24.04 installed

Yes, with an NVidia GTX1080 I get full 60 fps at 4K.  With the A380 it can only do 30 frames per second.

My test was just to play Minecraft Java Edition at 4K resolution.  It would drop to 10 frames per second much of the time.  With the GTX1080 it stays at 60 fps no matter what I'm doing.  Once 60 fps is working, I'll be testing 4k 60 frame content to make sure it plays well.  Ultimately this will be a media system, so VA-API and 60 frames will be essential.

I have been using NVidia for awhile so I'm not familiar with how to configure 3D with Xorg on other card types.  The main suggestion was to use a driver called "Modesetting" but it uses the frame buffer device and doesn't seem to have any 3D or video acceleration support, and of course I'm not willing to drop to 30 frames per second at 4K.

I don't have Windows so I can't load the Windows SSU you mentioned above.  Do you have a Linux version?

I was a huge fan of the Intel 3D cards 20 years ago which had great Linux support, and I was sad to see them go away.  I really hope the Arc cards will be as good some day.

Thanks!

Hello Pyite,

We really appreciate your response.

Since the problem we're having appears to be complex, please provide the following details so we can further isolate the issue that we have:

1. Download the Intel® System Support Utility and save the application to your system.

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/download/18895/intel-system-support-utility-for-the-linux-operating-system.html

You may also check out this page, How to Fix Your Low Frame Rate, and follow the Easy Fixes for Low FPS to see if somehow the performance of the system gets better.

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/gaming/resources/how-to-fix-your-low-frame-rate.html

Furthermore, when you have already shared with us your SSU, I will be discussing our issue with my team. As I mentioned earlier, the issue that we have is quite complex.

Thank you, and have a great day!
