I had a question related to the problem with the system not recognizing the laptop screen but working with the external monitor. Just wanted to post this in case someone else might find it of use in their endeavors.
It turns out that it was related to the BIOS and not the driver. There are two different sets of drivers (X75A and X75A1) related to this particular ASUS laptop. When I acquired this laptop the graphics appeared to be working but it was using the Microsoft default driver to make it work. I took a chance with resetting the BIOS to its initial release. Then I proceeded to update the BIOS version per release while verifying the correct version was selected for installation. Thankfully this has resolved this issue for my laptop.
