After updating to Windows 8.1: "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered"

Since I've updated to Windows 8.1 every time I press the power button to wake the computer from sleep, this happens:

The screen goes dark for a few seconds

then it starts working and I get the following message in Desktop:

"Display driver stopped responding and has recovered"

It's very annoying and time consuming, since I'm turning the tablet off and on (actually sleep/wake up) constantly during the day. (This doesn't happen when turning on the device when it's completely shut down though.)

I have:

Samsung ATIV Smart PC 500T

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator

Current Driver Installed 9.14.3.1170

P.S.: I should also mention that I disabled Windows lock screen by editing the registry - so when woken up, it goes directly to last opened app/program - no lock and login screen. But I think that this shouldn't matter, since I've done this on Windows 8 (same computer, same graphics card) and everything worked fine.

How can this be solved?

I have a recently (August, 2013) purchased TPT2 with Windows 8.0. After upgrading ti W8.1 I experienced video driver issues as well. Failure to come out of sleep mode, slow to come out of sleep mode, blue screens, etc. All this made it basically undependable and useless. Prior to the upgrade I made a backup of the system to a SD card so I restored W8.0. All is well again, but I really like the features of W8.1. Hopefully Lenovo and or Intel will publish a driver update soon.

I'm also on a TPT2. I had the same issue - having upgraded to Windows 8.1, the Intel Graphics driver (version 9.14.3.1160) would crash and restart when the tablet came out of connected standby.

A workaround has been posted in a Lenovo forum: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-slate-tablets/TPT2-Win-8-1-Display-driver-keeps-crashing/m-p/1285821# M26392 http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-slate-tablets/TPT2-Win-8-1-Display-driver-keeps-crashing/m-p/1285821# M26392

It involves uninstalling the 1160 driver, and installing an earlier version (9.14.3.1130), which bizarrely, has to be obtained from a Dell driver support site.

This worked, thank you.

The 1165 driver works as well (on the Envy X2) though I haven't tried the 1130 to see which is better:

http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/DriverDetails/Product/latitude-10-tablet?driverId=72W87&osCode=WB32A&fileId=3289581064&languageCode=EN&categoryId=CS Driver Details | Dell US

Open the device manager and roll back the existing display driver to 1160 from 1168 or whatever if it is newer than 1165.

Download and unpack the Dell drivers from the Dell link above

Navigate to Scripts\Graphics folder within the uppacked Dell ones and run the Setup (for just the Graphics).

After installation verify that that the driver in the Device Manager is 1165

Open Windows update and open the section on important updates

Locate the Intel GMA update, right click and select Hide Update so the 1168 or whatever driver does not reinstall. (If it does not show start over from step 1 above.

To blame this on the OEMs is crazy as the drivers come from Intel and work across all Z2780s.

I have the same problem with an Asus VivoTab TF810C - same z2760 chipset and the problems began after upgrading to Win 8.1 - In fact part of the first windows updates included an Intel Graphic Driver Update - Graphics Media Accelerator Driver 9.14.3.1168 - but it did nothing to fix the problem.

It's incredibly frustrating, annoying, time consuming and counter productive. I hope someone at Intel and their partners are listening and working on a fix.

Hi everyone,

Just an update on this issue; we are investigating the issue with Microsoft*, and there will be a driver fix released to OEM's at some point (no ETA though). Again, I would recommend contacting your OEM's in order to find out when this fix is, as well as to obtain the driver when it is released.

Furthermore I would like to state that as a general rule, we do not provide direct driver support for Tablet products - this is because the OEM's of tablet systems will include many required changes with their version of our graphics driver, such as touch screen, auto-rotation, connected standby, etc. That is why I refer you to them for support - our drivers are generic and do not offer the vast array of features required for your systems to run properly.

Thanks,

-Nic

Thank you at least for admitting the issue exists

Thank you!

As for not providing direct driver support - I suspect very generic not-fully-functional driver support directly from Intel would be better than some of the drivers we're getting directly from our OEMs

Possible answer/solution to this problem:

KB2887595 was just released which appears to address and fix this issue.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2887595 Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 R2 update rollup: November 2013

No, it doesn't help, just tried, driver still falls

Unfortunately, the November Windows 8.1 rollup update KB2887595 did not assist on my end either. Initially, it appeared to have fixed the problem however the display adapter just failed again.

To fix my issue for now, I rolled back my display adapter in device manager to the "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter". I then changed Windows Update to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them." I ran Windows Update to check for updates and then right clicked on and did a "hide" on the update for my display adapter to prevent it from being re-installed. My system still attempted to update the display adapter one additional time outside of Windows Update. I rolled back the display adapter once again to the "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter" and now no more problems with messages about my display driver crashing and recovering while I am using the "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter".

Hi everyone,

We have reproduced the issue, and have come up with a fix. There should be a driver available on Windows* Update within the next 24-48 hours that will resolve this issue. Please update to driver version 9.14.3.1176 when it is ready

If this update does not resolve your issues, please let me know.

Thanks,

-Nic

*EDIT* Missed a number, driver version # corrected.

So did you guys (Intel) do this, or was it Microsoft or the OEMs?

Nonetheless - THANK YOU!

As for now 4 hours passed and update seems to be fixing an issue. This what happens, when you actually try to understand the problem, not write a come-off.

Thanks

Just as an FYI; this issue is for fixing systems that run off of the Intel® Atom™ Processor Z2760 (formerly codenamed Clover Trail). If you are not using this system, this fix does not apply to you.

Thank you,

Thank you kindly. I will try this as well. I guess nothing is easy since Intel licensed the PowerVR graphics chip instead of using your own.

Intel has my vote for more fanless x86 processors like the CloverTrail/BayTrail! I still can't believe it has as much processing power as my older Pentium D 3ghz desktop. This little tablet even makes my quad core AMD with 8GB and platter drives seem really slow for daily operations.

I spoke with Gateway support as Gateway provided my system with a "customized computer manufacturer driver" per the Intel System Identification Utility. Gateway support advised they do not have a Windows 8.1 display driver available for my system, that the driver on their website was a Windows 8 display driver, and to, "contact Intel support and check whether they provide drivers for Windows 8.1." When I advised I had tried the drivers on the Intel website and the driver provided via Windows Update with no resolution and that my system was shipped with a customized computer manufacturer driver by Gateway I was further advised, "Can you please contact Intel support to assist you in this regards. Since Intel has to provide drivers to fix the issue."

I have a Intel(R) Pentium(R) CPU G640 @ 2.80GHz with Intel® HD Graphics 2000 (computer model: Gateway SX-2865).

Is it worth pursuing this with Intel? If I wait long enough will this problem fix itself eventually?

For now, I am having to use the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter due to this issue.

Hello, I am using a Samsung ATIV Smart PC 500t. Do you know what the latest drivers will be released for this model? I am still on 1170 and that is the latest on windows update. Is there a way to download 1176 manually?

Nic,

I am experiencing these issues on my Lenovo Lynx K3011. Will this driver be available for my tablet?

If so, will it download via Windows Update or do I need to download and install it manually?
