After updating to Windows 8.1: "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered"

Since I've updated to Windows 8.1 every time I press the power button to wake the computer from sleep, this happens:

The screen goes dark for a few seconds

then it starts working and I get the following message in Desktop:

"Display driver stopped responding and has recovered"

It's very annoying and time consuming, since I'm turning the tablet off and on (actually sleep/wake up) constantly during the day. (This doesn't happen when turning on the device when it's completely shut down though.)

I have:

Samsung ATIV Smart PC 500T

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator

Current Driver Installed 9.14.3.1170

P.S.: I should also mention that I disabled Windows lock screen by editing the registry - so when woken up, it goes directly to last opened app/program - no lock and login screen. But I think that this shouldn't matter, since I've done this on Windows 8 (same computer, same graphics card) and everything worked fine.

How can this be solved?

I also have a Lenovo Lynx and I am waiting for this update.

In the meantime I use the 1130-Version from Dell.

Hope there will soon be a correct solution for us...

Well this is interesting - I've finally gotten around to installing the update, and on my ATIV Smart PC: Bupkiss... nothing. Doesn't work - the display driver still crashes every time I wake the tablet. :S

Back to Dell 1130...

I have the same issue on my ASUS Vivo Tab TF810C with its Z2760 processor.

The update isn't available on Windows Update for me. Is there any way to download it manually, or will it come soon? This problem is very bad.

Hi kwitsi,

This fix is being provided in drivers that are distributed by the OEM of your system. I do not know when Lenovo* will have the update live for you to download if they do not have it already. I would contact your OEM to find out when a fix will be ready for you.

@Everyone: I would advise anyone still awaiting on this fix to be provided to them, to contact your OEM and find out. Again, Intel® has no control or authority for when OEM's provide software updates for their hardware.

Thanks,

-Nic

The new driver installed automatically with Windows Updates on my Thinkpad Tablet 2. It works great and has solved the wake-up problem completely. Lenovo has published a BIOS update (ver. 1.32) that I recommend installing as well. The BIOS update solves a battery charging problem (which I experienced) and includes compatibility for Windows 8.1. Right now my Tablet 2 is running as I expect it to and it has no issues at all.

Thank you Intel for the Display driver update.

An announcement for anyone on the following systems;

  • Asus* Vivo Tab TF810C
  • Samsung ATIV systems with Z2760

The above fix is not for you. There is another driver fix in the works that should be released by your OEM's in a few days that will contain the actual fix for your issue.

Thanks,

-Nic

I received the fix (Windows 8.1 display driver for the Intel HD Graphics 2000/3000) this morning. It is available via Windows Update and the Intel website (https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=3319&DwnldID=23377 Download Center) however not via my system's OEM website yet. Thank you again Nic! This driver has completely solved my problem!

Hi everyone,

I have been informed that Windows* Update now has a comprehensive driver that is acceptable for all Z2760 platforms. Please upgrade to this driver if you are still experiencing issues.

Thanks,

-Nic

I've got a Samsung Smart PC XE500T and an Asus VivoTab TF800C and the new Driver installed on both systems yesterday through Windows Update. It seems all issues are gone. Check Windows Update for new updated. Once installed the new driver reads Driver Version: 9.14.3.1177 | Driver Date: 11-15-2013

UPDATE NOV 23, 2013

After Using All Three Device Above for a couple of days, I can say that my resume from sleep problems are gone But now my power drain is huge. While I was sleeping and PC was too - The Asus Vivo Tab went from 63% battery to 42% overnight. That's horrendous. Same thing happened on the my wifes Samsung 500T. I'm rolling back to the Dell Driver Again. And just while typing this, I went from 43 to 35%

Regrettably it seems the "comprehensive" 1178 locks up the HP Envy X2 in Sleep as older 116X versions did. I went back to 1176.

1176 is not much better than 1178 so I went all the way back to 1165. Although it takes a bit to wake, it hangs less often and I think the synaptics driver is happier too as the mouse doesn't disappear so much. So, it'll be a Dell graphics driver for my HP 😛

Well that's interesting... my Smart PC 500T is still exhibiting the issue, even after the update.

I wonder if uninstalling the display adapter driver(s) and letting Windows update re-install it would fix your issue. It might be worth a try. Hope it works for you!

I just fixed my Samsung 500T XE500T1C-A04US.

What I did was

1. Open Device Manager

2. Under Display adapters. Right click on Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator

3. Click on Update Driver Software...

4. Select update from internet

I also had the problem where the display adapter would crash when resuming from standby mode. After doing the above it does not crash anymore.

The driver version I had before was 9.14.3.1170. Now it is 9.14.3.1177.

I do not know why it would not show up via windows update but worked when using the device manager update search.
