Asus laptop, Intel UHD graphics. Powerdirector problems, and a question

Hello everyone.

I have an Asus X1502ZA laptop, Intel UHD Graphics, and 8GB of RAM, and I use Windows 11 25H2 with the latest updates.

Recently I installed Cyberlink Powerdirector 365, a program for video editing, and I've been experiencing some problems with the audio waveform not displaying correctly in a feature of Powerdirector called Audio Editor. The audio waveform doesn't change when moving audio keyframes.

I mention that in other programs, such as Audacity and DaVinci Resolve, the audio waveform can be manipulated correctly.

After writing to Cyberlink support, they advised me to install the latest graphics driver from the Intel website.

The graphics driver that I had installed was through Windows Update or MyAsus, I'm not exactly sure, and it was Version 31.0.101.4255, from the year 2023. The driver that I found on Intel is from the year 2025 and it is Version 32.0.101.7080. I mention that neither Windows Update nor MyAsus (which is Asus' software for keeping the system up-to-date through driver and BIOS updates) found a newer driver than 31.0.101.4255.

Seeing that there was a new driver on Intel so recently released, I was hopeful that my problems with Powerdirector would be fixed. But after installing the new driver, the problems are the same. I even reinstalled Windows 4 days ago, and then the new driver, but unfortunately it didn't help my problem.

I mention that although I installed the new driver through the setup file downloaded from Intel's website, I had used the Intel Driver and Support Assistant before installing to see if it would consider the same driver version as a correct update - and it did.

Would you have any advice regarding these things?

I have written today to Cyberlink support about what I did and the fact that the problem still exists, and I'm waiting for a response.

Would you recommend against installing the graphics driver directly from Intel and sticking with what my laptop's manufacturer delivered to me even if it's 2 years old? I checked the Asus website for my laptop and it displays the old driver (31.0.101.4255) as the latest.

Since installing the new driver, I noticed 2 times glitches when the display turns off or when the laptop goes to sleep, I could hear a short sound similar to the one you hear when a Device or Hardware connect or disconnect (I'm not sure though, but something like that) - only 2 times I noticed this in total so far in the past 4 days. One of these times, together with the sound, it appeared as if Windows Explorer restarted, and I couldn't see the tray icon of one of the programs that were open in the background. I had to restart Windows Explorer and the icon appeared again. It could be from another Windows issue, maybe it's not from the driver, I don't really know.

  1. Does the audio waveform display issue occur with all audio file formats, or only specific ones (e.g., MP3, WAV, AAC)?
  2. When you say the waveform “doesn’t change when moving audio keyframes,” do you mean the visual waveform fails to update, or that the audio changes are not being applied?
  3. Does this problem affect both imported audio files and audio extracted from video files?
  4. Have you tried creating a new project with a simple audio file to check if the issue persists?
  5. Are you experiencing any other graphics-related problems besides the display glitches (such as gaming performance, video playback, or other software issues)?
  6. When the display glitch occurs, does it happen during specific activities or randomly, such as during sleep/wake cycles?
  7. Have you checked Windows Event Viewer for any driver-related errors or warnings since installing the Intel driver?

Hi Kent Russel,

 

Thank you for your response. Regarding your questions, I will respond to them point by point.

 

1. My main editing work is with MP4 video files. I mainly want to increase and decrease the volume of different portions of the video. After I read your question, I checked if the problem still exists with WAV, MP3, FLAC audio files and with an AVI video file that I had - and yes, the same problem exists. I don't have an AAC file at the moment, but I think that probably it would be the same with it.

 

2. The audio changes are being applied, i.e. when I move the audio audio keyframes up the audio volume goes up for that respective portion and when I move them down the audio volume goes down. The problem is that the visual waveform fails to show this - it stays the same. For your convenience, please see the short video that I recorded for Cyberlink support. What you can see in the video is that the visual waveform is modified correctly when Zooming Out completely in the audio editor. So the problem appears when Zooming In.

Here is another short video recording, where you can see what a strange thing happens sometimes with the audio waveform in Audio Editor. In this case it is with an MP3 file, but I saw this happen with video files as well:

3. This includes audio-video files (like MP4, AVI) and audio files (MP3, WAV, FLAC). I haven't tried specifically with audio extracted from video files, I don't find it useful at the moment.

 

4. Yes. As I said, I tried with MP3, WAV and FLAC audio files, and the issue still persists.

 

5. I haven't noticed. And games I don't play at the moment.

 

6. As I said, I only noticed the glitch twice since installing the new driver. Once it was before reinstalling Windows - I closed the lid of my laptop and put it to sleep and I heard a short sound similar or exactly the same as the "Device Connect" sound in Windows. The second time was when I had two external drives connected through USB and at some point I heard that sound again, even though I wasn't doing anything on the laptop at the moment, and Windows Explorer kind of glitched or restarted.

I mention that I was caught off guard at those moments and wasn't so attentive, because they were unexpected. But I don't remember having similar problems before installing the new driver.

 

7. Now that you asked this, I checked. I created a filter for the System and the Application logs, for Critical, Errors and Warnings for the following Event Sources: Display, Intel Graphics Software, Intel Graphics Software Service, Intel.GraphicsSoftware.App, Intel.GraphicsSoftware.Service, IntelAudioService, IntelAudioServiceLog. I couldn't find anything.

Then, I looked in the System logs for any errors or warnings related to drivers using these Sources (with some help from ChatGPT): ACPI, disk, Disk, DriverFrameworks-UserMode, iaStorAVC, iaStorV, iaStorVD, Kernel-PnP, Kernel-PnP-Rundown, Kernel-Power, Kernel-PowerTrigger, storahci, USB-CCID, USB-MAUSBHOST, USB-UCMUCSICX, USB-USBHUB, USB-USBHUB3, USB-USBPORT, USB-USBXHCI, usbvideo, WUDFRd. All I could find were these three, which have Event ID 219 and Source Kernel-PnP. They come up every time after I turn on my computer, and maybe also after I wake my laptop up after sleep mode:

8. When I used the gfx_win_101.7080.exe installer to install the new driver, at some point there was an option that said: "Execute a clean installation" - "A clean installation removes all old drivers and restores Intel settings to the default value". 9. I am attaching a screenshot of the option I have in PowerDirector regarding Hardware Acceleration. I have tried with it enabled and disabled and the issue persists.

I hope you are doing well, and thank you for your detailed responses. To continue investigating and analyzing the issue, could you please provide answers to the following questions:


  • Does the waveform display problem occur at every zoom level when zoomed in, or only at certain zoom percentages?
  • When you zoom out fully and the waveform appears correctly, does the issue reappear immediately if you zoom back into the same section?
  • Have you tried using PowerDirector’s "Reset to Default" or "Restore Factory Settings" options to rule out corrupted preferences?
  • Since the audio processing (such as volume changes) works fine but the waveform visualization fails, have you attempted:
    • Changing PowerDirector’s display scaling or DPI settings?
    • Running PowerDirector in Windows 7 or 8 compatibility mode?
  • Regarding the WUDFRd driver errors, have you:
    • Updated your ASUS touchpad drivers?
    • Checked if these errors existed before updating the graphics driver?
  • Can you test PowerDirector on a different user account on the same machine to determine if the issue is system-wide or specific to your user profile?


Given that you are experiencing new system glitches after the Intel driver update and the PowerDirector issue remains unresolved, I recommend reverting to the ASUS-provided driver version 31.0.101.4255. This driver is specifically validated for your laptop model, and you did not have display glitches before.

Thank you for your reply. I hope you're doing well too.

 

I will respond to your questions soon, but for now I want to let you know about a somewhat urgent matter. I caught that "New Hardware" sound again and Windows Explorer restarting (or something like that). So I quickly looked in Event Viewer to see if anything relevant is there. So, what I found is that the "glitches" that I've been telling you about are Windows Update trying to install the version 31.0.101.4255 Display driver...

Here are the events I found, connected to those "glitches" (turns out they likely are not glitches):

 

Event ID: 43, Source: WindowsUpdateClient, Level: Information
Installation Started: Windows has started installing the following update: Intel Corporation - Extension - 31.0.101.4255

 

Event ID: 19, Source: WindowsUpdateClient, Level: Information
Installation Successful: Windows successfully installed the following update: Intel Corporation - Extension - 31.0.101.4255

 

And then I looked in Windows Update in Settings and found this:

 

 

So, this is all while I have the Intel version 32.0.101.7082 installed already through the Intel Driver & Support Assistant! I checked Device Manager and it shows that I have the 32.0.101.7082 driver installed.

As you can see, Windows Update wants me to install the old 31.0.101.4255 driver. What does it mean if Windows wants to override the latest version of the driver that I have installed and wants to install that 2 and a half year old 31.0.101.4255 driver? Should I do something to stop that?

I found those Event messages also appear on the 8th of December, so it is quite likely that that was the other time that I heard that sound and saw Windows Explorer "glitch". So, the only other occasion that I heard that sound and saw a "glitch" before reinstalling Windows on 4th December is very likely that it had to do with the same thing: Windows Update trying to install the old Display driver. So, in total, I noticed 3 events like this.

 

So, I would say those "glitches" were not glitches, but just what happens when Windows was installing a new driver which is related to the Display.

 

Do you have any advice related to these things? I will soon respond to your questions regarding Powerdirector, but for now I don't really know which driver is the correct one and what I should do. In a way, I find it absurd to use a driver which was launched in March 2023! But, I don't know...

Thank you for your detailed responses. Upon checking, it seems like the OEM of your device which is ASUS recommends the Graphics driver 31.0.101.4255 for your device. With that being said, please completely remove the current Graphics driver by using Display Drive Uninstaller (DDU) and install the Graphics driver version ⁠31.0.101.4255.


Please note that this is an OEM device, it is best to use drivers from the Original Equipment Manufacturer of your device. Your device manufacturer may have altered features, incorporated customizations, or made other changes to some components for better compatibility with your system.


To uninstall the Intel Graphics Driver from your system using the  Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) software, follow these instructions: 

  1. Download the latest version of the software.
    • If you download the Installer, run it, it will create a shortcut on the desktop. 
    • If you download the Portable/ self-extracting version, look for the executable and extract it. Remember the path. 
  1. Reboot into Windows* safe mode. (Refer to Start your PC in safe mode in Windows.)
  2. Look for the shortcut on the desktop (step 1.1) or the extract path chosen (step 1.2.1) and run the DDU executable.
  3. Click Close in the Options window.
  4. Select device type to GPU and select device to the one you want to remove. If you are doing a clean-up, you can choose all GPUs.
  5. Click Clean and restart or Clean and Shutdown depending on your needs.
  6. Wait for the software to finish the process. It will automatically reboot Windows to the typical mode or shutdown the system.

Wishing you a Merry Christmas.

 

In the meantime, Cyberlink Customer Support has told me that they were able to reproduce my problem on their test system(s). They don't know when the issue will be fixed, so in the meantime I have requested a refund about a week ago. I was permitted to ask for a refund only in the first 30 days after purchase, and that period ended a few days ago. So now I have an unlicensed program.

 

• Does the waveform display problem occur at every zoom level when zoomed in, or only at certain zoom percentages?

 

It occurs at every zoom level when zoomed in. But there is a peculiarity that appears only at the First Level of Zoom-in. Have you seen the second video I shared with you through Google Drive? You can see there the peculiarity. The modified waveform appears as a strange glitch at the right of the Audio Editor window, regardless of how I move the slider left or right. At further Zoom-in levels this perculiarity is gone, and only the incorrectly-unmodified waveforms appear. • When you zoom out fully and the waveform appears correctly, does the issue reappear immediately if you zoom back into the same section?

 

Yes. Please check the video - at 00:29 you can see I zoomed-out fully. And then I zoomed-in one level - the waveform seems correct, but when I move the slider to the right, you can see that peculiar strange glitch that I've told you about.

 

• Have you tried using PowerDirector’s "Reset to Default" or "Restore Factory Settings" options to rule out corrupted preferences?

 

I looked and didn't see such an option. Bare in mind that I had reinstalled Windows and then Powerdirector recently, so it was in a clean state. The only thing I remember changing was the locations of where to save the temp files. And Hardware Acceleration I turned on and off to test, but I don't remember if I did this before the Windows reinstallation or after.

 

•  Since the audio processing (such as volume changes) works fine but the waveform visualization fails, have you attempted:

  • Changing PowerDirector’s display scaling or DPI settings?

 

I haven't seen such an option. And I did look. Powerdirector doesn't seem to have many options available, generally speaking. One option I noticed is about Hardware Acceleration. Then options about where to save temp files etc.

 

  • Running PowerDirector in Windows 7 or 8 compatibility mode?

 

Haven't tried. But as this software is from 2025, I have a doubt that it will work well in an Windows 7 or 8 environment.

 

•  Regarding the WUDFRd driver errors, have you:

  • Updated your ASUS touchpad drivers?

 

I have the latest Asus touchpad driver provided by Asus installed.

 

  • Checked if these errors existed before updating the graphics driver?

 

I have checked and yes, they appeared before updating the graphics driver as well.

 

• Can you test PowerDirector on a different user account on the same machine to determine if the issue is system-wide or specific to your user profile?

 

Now that I don't have a license for Powerdirector anymore, I am quite unable to test it further.

But I have a friend who has a similar laptop as mine, and the idea came to me yesterday to install the Trial version of Powerdirector on his laptop and test if the problem appears as well.

 

To reiterate, Cyberlink support has been able to reproduce my issue. And I'm glad they did.

I installed Powerdirector on my friend's laptop yesterday, to test if the same problems happen. His laptop is Asus X515EA, with similar specs like mine (Windows 11 25H2, 8GB RAM, Intel UHD Graphics - like me). My laptop is also Asus, as I mentioned in my first post.

 

So, the problems with the audio waveforms happen on his laptop as well. From what I tested, the problems match.
