DirectX 9 on 11th Gen Processors (Xe-LP) - Native or Emulated?

A question that I've been curious about for a while, maybe someone here has the background information to know the exact details. Given the weird naming conventions, trying to search for the answer has not been fruitful.

I have a system with an 11th Gen Core i7 1165G7 processor, using integrated Iris Xe Graphics (the first product with the "Xe" branding, part of the "Gen12" graphics architecture, and which may have been retroactively branded "Xe-LP" by Intel).

With the launch of other Xe-branded products, Intel states that they switched from native DX9 support to D3D9on12 emulation "since our 12th Gen Intel® Core™ processor launch in 2021", which is after my processor was released.

When 12th Gen processors were released, Intel started maintaining two driver package releases - One that covered 6th-11th Gen processors, and another that was 12th Gen processors onwards. Presumably, this was to separate the support for DX9 and the additional work on the emulation front.

However, when the A770 and A750 products launched in Oct 2022, that driver setup changed and 11th Gen processors jumped packages - Intel now maintains one package that covers 6th-10th Gen processors, and another that supports 11th Gen processors onwards plus Xe Standalone.

So, my questions are as follows:

  • Does my processor natively support DirectX 9 hardware calls?
  • Does my processor still use native DirectX 9 calls on the latest versions of the graphics drivers, or did it switch from native to emulated calls when the driver restructure changed? (31.0.101.3490)
  • If it did switch from native DX9 to D3D9on12 with that driver change, did I lose performance when it comes to DirectX 9 applications?

Thanks for your time!

Hello retroNUC,

Thank you for waiting for a response.

After reviewing this matter, we can confirm that the D3D9on12 mapping layer solution has been implemented on 12th Gen Intel® Core™ processors and onwards. 11th Gen Intel® Core™ processors should have Native support for DirectX 9.
