Display Driver has stopped responding and has recovered

Hi. I know this question has been asked many times, but many are unanswered. I have a Dell Inspiron 1545, Window 7 64 bit. Just yesterday, my laptop kept blacking out, freezes and then unfreeze and this message would pop up saying, "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered. Display driver Intel Graphics Accelerator Drivers for Windows XP(R) stopped responding and has successfully recovered." It keeps happening around every 15-30 minutes. Sometimes, it totally blacks out. Other times, it unfreeze but the windows are blank. Someone please help me. The display adapter I have is Mobile Intel (R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family." Some people said online to update it and that might fix the problem. I went to the Intel website and updated the lastest one given, but the problem is still here. I've restored my laptop to a certain restore point, but still did not solve the problem. Suggestions and ideas? Thank you a head of time.

My problem has been since I bought the stupid things years ago. I have tried everything. It seems no one can help. You would think with all the complaints posted all over the internet that Intel would fix the problem. My driver is updated. mobile intel(r) 4 series express chipset family. It even installed the 45 to replace the 4 one time and still the same issue. Sometimes I can disable the driver to do certain things, but the Plants vs. Zombies game needs it to even open. There is no way I can even open the media center. With pretty much all games or movies it will keep freezing and recovering until eventually there is this loud, irritating noise and the only way to get it to stop is unplug it and take the battery out. Looks like this doesn't matter, but I have a Toshiba SatelliteM305-S4848. Oh, I also tried to right click and open the graphics properties, but it won't even let me do that. It freezes up as soon as I open it and when it recovers it closes the properties. I did read on several sites to change the BIOS settings, but on my computer you see the BIOS in the menu, but you don't have the option to click on it. Because of Intel it seems like there are so many computers that are worthless. We spend all this money for what? To get a piece of crap we have nothing but problems with? My Photo Explosion freezes up, the installed games like MahJong freezes up, I can't run a screen saver or whatever that was called in the media player that would show all the different colors on the screen as a song played. Sorry, it's been a while since I tried it and now it doesn't even seem to be an option on this media player. I also have this movie maker and I could never use this laptop to actually out it on a disc because of this stupid, worthless driver. Has anyone called Intel and talked to someone? Something needs to be done.

Your configuration looks good, thank you for the info. I would recommend trying your OEM's display driver though, just to make sure. Sorry you're running into this issue. Would it be possible to get the full model name for your system? Your dxdiag only said Toshiba* Satellite M305, but the support website for your laptop has about 20 different kinds of M305's - I might have linked you the wrong driver.

I installed the older version that you gave me and it actually made it a little worse. I opened up Mahjong that came with windows to check it and it would freeze up, recover, and freeze up again so you wouldn't even be able to play a game at all. I usually just try to disable the driver when I want to do something without it freezing up, but some things obviously can't be ran without it. I did try a generic driver on here one time and it was better, but kind of just like disabling the other driver you can't run everything. I am ready to just give up. I've been dealing with it since 2009 and nothing seems to make a difference. Thanks Nic.

At this point I'm going to suggest running an update on your BIOS. Can I click the default button? I don't want to mess anything up. I know I can't do it on startup when I hit F2 because the BIOS is greyed out.

The way that website was linked, it won't show you to the proper tab it seems. You'll need to navigate to the "download" tabs in the link I sent you, and sort the second drop-down by "BIOS". From there, it will give you a file to run (similar to a driver installation file).

I did all that and it made it even worse. I tried to record the screen while opening up one of the things that gives me that error, but it barely gets started when it happens a couple times before I can even see what's going on on the screen and then it freezes up before I can do anything. Usually I have time to close the program so it won't freeze up. I've tried several times and the only thing I can do is take the battery out and unplug it.

Due to the issue of your system behaving worse and worse after everything you do to it; I would suggest doing a fresh re-install of your operating system. These behaviors are not normal for just a simple software issue, and may be the result of failing hardware. Try wiping/re-installing your operating system on that machine, performing all the Windows* updates, and seeing if that fixes the issue.

I've tried that several times. You would think these things would be thoroughly inspected before being sold. I guess I either buy one that works or just don't watch movies, videos, play games, or use the screen saver. Oh well, thanks anyway.
