Hi. I know this question has been asked many times, but many are unanswered. I have a Dell Inspiron 1545, Window 7 64 bit. Just yesterday, my laptop kept blacking out, freezes and then unfreeze and this message would pop up saying, "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered. Display driver Intel Graphics Accelerator Drivers for Windows XP(R) stopped responding and has successfully recovered." It keeps happening around every 15-30 minutes. Sometimes, it totally blacks out. Other times, it unfreeze but the windows are blank. Someone please help me. The display adapter I have is Mobile Intel (R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family." Some people said online to update it and that might fix the problem. I went to the Intel website and updated the lastest one given, but the problem is still here. I've restored my laptop to a certain restore point, but still did not solve the problem. Suggestions and ideas? Thank you a head of time.

@Kumar2320: Try this driver; https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=22165&lang=eng Download Center
@Michaely: Does your system have an additional graphics card installed? Looking at the support site for your product, it appears that it might also have a 3rd party graphics solution as well as ours. If so, you will want to download/install the latest driver for that product as well. Sometimes this error message results when another graphics product on the system is missing drivers.
Thanks,
-Nic

Same issue for me
3 days ago my new Alienware 17 arrived. I had some issues off the bat with Origin trying to download The Sims 3 but i solved that issue. The current problem is when the game is being played. The game will freeze and a notification on the desktop will say..
"Display Driver stopped responding and has recovered: display drivers Intel HD graphics drivers for windows 8 (R) stopped responding and has successfully recovered"
This notification will pop up a few times (about 😎 and the game will continue to play until another one does saying...
"Application has been blocked from accessing Graphics hardware: Application TS3W.exe has been blocked from accessing graphics hardware."
I have uninstalled and reinstalled all the current drivers. Its operating on windows 8. And i have an HQ mod for The Sims 3 for higher quality Sim detail definition. I do noticed the game crashing with this mod but not as badly as the previous hq mode i Intel's support page is currently down so i can't get any help from them... I tried running in comparability mode and that seems to just prolong the process of the game from crashing. Meaning i get more of the first notifications listed above before the game crashes out. I'm at a loss and any help would be great!

I kept searching for solutions. One site recommended computer cleaner software but the link took me to software that I had to pay for. The idea appealed though and I came up with this review of free clean-up software:
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/registry-cleaner/fr/ccleaner.htm CCleaner Review (v4.04.4197)
In that page if you follow the 'builds page' link you get to:
I downloaded the top download - Ccleaner Installer - and carried out all the clean up procedures. That was 48 hours ago and my display driver has not frozen yet. Fingers crossed!!!!!

@ryanjrqwe: Sure I can give some advice here! First and foremost, I would upgrade to the latest driver we have for your system here; https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=22165&lang=eng Download Center
For the games you're trying to play, your system should be able to handle most of them just fine. Are you talking about Dota* (original) or Dota2*? The original should work just fine, not sure about Dota2* though. WoW* is (even now) still really system intensive. I would recommend upgrading to a newer CPU (which means an entirely new system for laptops) if you want to play that. You have enough ram, theoretically - to run any of those games, but because your OS is 32-bit you are limited to the 4GB you have available. Even if you were able to upgrade the ram in your system (more expensive to upgrade RAM for laptops) you'd still be constrained by your OS memory limits. I would consider a 64-bit Windows* OS in the future for any new systems you purchase for gaming.
@Mimisan: Try updating to our latest driver (your version = 3071, ours = 3165); https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=22842&lang=eng Download Center
However, that file being blocked is an important game file for The Sims 3*. You might check that your anti-virus or the OS itself is not blocking this file from being accessed, as that will also cause your game to have issues.
@Oakman: As a rule of thumb, I would never trust any "registry cleaning software". It's not that most of them are malicious, but they often delete registry files they consider to be harmful or unnecessary to your system. If you notice your computer acting funny in the coming weeks, back up your data and do an OS re-install, as registry cleaners function like a game of Jenga*.
You have our latest driver, but it's showing in the dxdiag that you only have a 1st generation (you in fact have a 2nd generation). I would recommend doing a full uninstall of your graphics drivers (when uninstalling select the checkbox for deleting associated driver files). Uninstall -> restart -> repeat until you are at a driver version listed as a Basic Microsoft* Graphics Driver. This will mean all your drivers are fully uninstalled. From there, install the latest version again (3062) from here; https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=22628&lang=eng Download Center
Let me know how that goes!
Thanks everyone,

Many thanks. I'll certainly defer to your greater knowledge about "registry cleaning software". Having said that, coincidence or not, the 48 hour period I mentioned finished with just one 'not responding/recovered' message and no freezes.
I've now tried to follow your uninstalling instructions and I have made things worse - 'not responding/recovered' messages and several freezes. Something appears to be stopping me from completely uninstalling 2768 and 2932 and I cannot get as far as the Basic Microsoft Graphics Driver. The checkbox for deleting associated driver files sometimes appears and sometimes does not. I've tried rolling back drivers and then uninstalling but it makes no difference.
I'm trying to uninstall via Control Panel/Device Manager. Is that correct?
I did warn you that I'm a computer thickie!!!!

Hi Oakman,
If you are having issues with the uninstallation from control panel, I would recommend continuing the uninstallation process in Safe Mode instead. When you start up/boot up your computer, there is a BIOS splash screen, which usually shows the name of your system/motherboard manufacturer. You usually see options like F2 to go into BIOS, F7 for Boot Options, etc. It may be F8, or F10 - but one of those should be able to get you into Safe Mode (you'll be provided a list of safe modes to choose from, choose just the normal Safe Mode w/o Networking). Try the uninstall while here and you should experience a lot less failures.
Let me know how it goes!

Thanks for your patience. Incidentally, I found the best route to Safe Mode in W8 is to click on restart while holding the shift button down and going via 'Troubleshoot'.
Unfortunately, I still could not uninstall older drivers. Initially, the uninstall works properly and 3062's impending departure brings up the box to tick for deleting associated driver files. After that, though, clicking on 'uninstall' does not bring up the box and I just cannot get rid of the driver files for 2768 which means they are recovered on restart as far as I can tell. Either I am still doing something wrong or there is a glitch with my set-up. Is there another way of deleting those driver files?
Sorry to be a pain.

I'm beginning to think that a OS clean install is the only option. As a last resort I'd like to try re-installing 2768 but I can't find it in the downloads section. Can you give me a link, please.

Hi Nic,
I downloaded the driver you suggested but the problem is still occurring. Is there something else that might help?

Hi Nic
With nothing else to do on Bank Holiday Sunday I decided to go for broke and do a clean install of W8. Despite serious brain pain I got it all done and everything reloaded. Guess what, I still got a 'Failed to respond/recovered' message! Luckily, it has only been the one so far and no freezes yet.
So, I can conclude that the registry cleaner glitch, if there was one, has been removed.
To push on, I tried, in Safe Mode, to uninstall/restart as you suggested. The same situation resulted. After the initial uninstall of 3062, the box to tick for the removal of driver software does not appear. Effectively, therefore, I still cannot get rid of 2768 or earlier drivers. I get as far as the graphics being described as Microsoft Corp - WDDM 1.2 but with the installed driver still shown as 2768. Nothing I can do will budge it and I'd have thought that reinstalling 2768 will not help since Windows 8 presumably found that from source on the clean install.
I think the system works better after the clean install and I'll let you know if I get further problems/messages. The very occasional one I can live with.

@Oakman: Can you provide me a copy of your new dxdiag? You shouldn't be getting so many errors trying to uninstall our driver, even in safe mode - this is the first I've heard of this issue. Also, if it doesn't show up in your dxdiag, can you tell me what motherboard/BIOS revision you have?
@J.Gill: Can you post a new copy of your dxdiag please?
Thanks,

Hi Oakman,
I would suggest updating your BIOS next. It looks like your version is quite a bit older than the latest provided; http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?cat=Download&os=BIOS&Model=H67M http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?cat=Download&os=BIOS&Model=H67M
Let me know if you see an improvement after this. Also, your dxdiag is reflecting a 3062 driver version. Can you confirm whether that's the case or not via the Device Manager?
Thanks,
-Nic

Hi Nic
Things have moved on again! I tried doing the driver deletes again, failed and had a go at updating the BIOS. Despite following the instructions on the Asrock website as carefully as I could, I obviously made a botch of something because I killed the PC. W8 recovery started and failed. Eventually, I managed to get the 'troubleshoot' menu and all that offered me was a 'refresh'. That worked to the extent that the PC was alive again but all my programmes were lost although my personal files were not. Four hours later I was back to where I started but with one gain. The graphics card shown was the basic Microsoft one and I did a full download from scratch from your site now confirmed with 3062 shown as the applied driver.
So far no 'FtRes/Rec' messages and no freezes. Unless I get one or the other, I think I'll leave well alone.
