Feature Request - implement EDID override

Hello,

it would be nice if the Intel Graphics driver would support overriding EDID information like described in this document from Microsoft:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/hardware/gg487330 http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/hardware/gg487330

Why is this needed?

In a common HTPC (multimedia PC) setup with a PC, AVR (audio video receiver) and a television, the EDID information stored in the receiver & television that is passed to the PC determines the video and audio capabilities like: supported resolutions, supported audio formats etc ..

The problem is that very often the system only "sees" the EDID information of the television, and not that of the receiver, and so you don't get support for audio formats like DTS, DTS-HD, Dolby TrueHD that are supported by the receiver ...

The latest Sandy bridge CPU and corresponding chipset support all these sound standards, but they often not useable cause of these EDID problems.

Actually it really does not matter what video card / integrated graphics you use, NVidia and AMD graphics have the same problem, but their drivers

allows people to override the EDID information like is described in the above linked document from Microsoft.

Please implement this stuff, shouldn't be that hard to do, for one of you senior driver programmers it's probably just a few hours of work ...

Thank you

Christian

Great news! This completes the platform support. These drivers enable the use of 3rd party EDID applications for internal and external panels on Intel platforms.

Hi all,

Changes such as this are quite a lengthy process. It's still in 1st stages so I'll update as soon as I hear any news good/bad. Appreciate the follow up.

This thread was created in 2011.

Another one with a similar request was created in 2012.

http://www.monitortests.com/forum/Thread-Custom-Resolution-Utility-CRU?pid=587# pid587 http://www.monitortests.com/forum/Thread-Custom-Resolution-Utility-CRU?pid=587# pid587

A developer of a popular tool made a comment in 2013 about this exact issue.

People with Hackintoshes on the same hardware have been able to run displays on various resolutions and refresh rates.

I'm not blaming you, just saying that it is just inexcusable to not be able to fix a software/driver issue where an arbitrary resolution/refresh rate was set and has been reported for multiple years.

Some people have been saying the refresh rate cannot go over 60Hz @ 1080p, but I've been able to run 71Hz @ 1080p and 108Hz @ 1440x900, as well as 144Hz @ 720p over a DVI-D to HDMI cable on an Ivy Bridge generation HD4000. Anything higher gives the usual "custom resolution exceeds maximum bandwidth" message.

Please fix Intel...I just want to use my 144Hz Monitor.

Thank you!!!

Is there no way to escalate issues such as this? For the longest time I just assumed Intel did not care about this particular problem and chose to ignore it. Now that you guys are aware of the issue and see how many people need it fixed would it not make sense to put more "manpower" into it? We all understand that it will be a lengthy process but I'm sure everyone here would like the issue fixed before the hardware becomes outdated and Intel loses interest in it.

agreed, lets cross our fingers that we get it in first half of the next year

100% sir. I really hope this issue can be escalated in some way. There are so many people out there that have been dealing with this issue for years, and finally now Intel is stepping up to address the issue. I've been considering sending this laptop back to Dell simply because there is no way around Intel's block on this. I'll pick up a Sager laptop because they use a MUX to bypass Intel altogether and allow you to just run on the Nvidia driver and therefore you can use beyond the 60hz limitation imposed by Intel. I have about 2 weeks to decide before I return the laptop, but I'm thinking this won't be fixed any time soon. I'll let Dell know why the laptop is being returned, this issue is just far too large for someone used to higher refresh rates.

I gave up waiting and bought a Nvidia Quadro K420 graphics card. It has a nice feature in the Nvidia Control Panel where you can save the EDID of the monitor to a file and then force the loading of this saved EDID from the file rather than polling the monitor for it. After waiting for over 6 months for a solution this was $209 well spent. Now when I switch via KVM between my DisplayPort PCs it instantly syncs and most importantly Windows 7 no longer rearranges/resizes all my open Windows.

Shame on you Intel! People had this problem for years and you are still reviewing if you should implement a usable solution.

It is now February 1st and the last response we've had from Intel was almost 2 months ago.

Any status updates? Thanks.

5 years since the issue has been brought up "officially", and it's been there for quite a while longer. 5 months since it was supposedly reescalated. Basically nothing since. I think we have our answer and implied solution?

This EDID Intel feature pops up about every day. Particularly on laptops where the user replaces the lcd panel due to poor quality or failure.

I did a quick search, here are a bunch of recent results.

Well, Intel is aware about this for a few years by now and nothing has changed.

This is one of those little things that MUST be provided to the final user. It's like having the most beautiful/clean bathroom in the world but without toilet paper lol. The final experience won't be good.

If I were Intel, I'd fix this as soon as possible. I'm pretty sure if everyone knew about this before having issues, people would avoid this kind of product in their systems - including me. Only if I knew... I'd probably purchase a MXM laptop instead.

i think they are just pretending that they`re doing something but in reality intel don`t want to fix the problem so that people who just received a laptop yesterday as a gift, can't "damage" by overclocking their "new and glossy 60 Hz PnP lcd screen bios-locked 2ghz mobile single core processor intel gma graphics low-powered" cr-ap ! anyway I think you're getting the point.... but that's just my own opinion, nothing personal.

I'd also like to inform you all that this feature request is actually a bugfix request.

It is trivial to add an EDID override to Windows. 1) EDID_OVERRIDE in windows registry. 2) [edid] section in monitor.inf

The problem is that Intel's driver doesn't give a f about it

Hi all,

Yes this is still in process. I haven't reported back here with anything major because there's nothing major to report back with. I will say that I am actively engaged with the change control board, management, escalations team, and engineering. I've built the business case / "ask", provided your user feedback, escalated up the proper channels, and, this will still take time and further attention. I have this as an open topic I raise many times a week to ensure visibility persists, as the good user champion I am

I appreciate your patience, I know this has been a longtime open topic, but I'm pleased with the current traction, it's more than most I'm working with atm.

Sounds good, thanks for the update and your efforts. It seems like you're our only pressure point for this.

Well, I think we will calm down for a couple of weeks or so then.

It's great to get an update,

Thank you Bryce for making something happen about this. I hope you can forgive the many outbursts of anger and frustration - but it should be expected with such frustrating problems.

Keep it up and thanks again.

Intel's response is pathetic: This issue was first posted in 2011. It is now 2016.

Get out the prune juice, Intel. You are moving way too slowly, and it stinks for your customers.

Meanwhile, we will not be buying ANYTHING crippled by Intel Graphics. Every one of our brand-new, Intel-Graphics-infected Windows 10 (another corporate nightmare) boxes is plagued by the shift-all-windows-to-primary-monitor-when-monitors-turned-off "Windows functionality," and, unlike NVIDIA, inexperienced-in-graphics Intel has neglected to make good on -- FOR NEARLY FIVE YEARS -- requests for EDID override (essential for other fixes, as well).

This, folks, is why MONOPOLIES ARE BAD FOR THE CONSUMER.
