Graphics update causes black screen on restart.

Todat I updated my Intel HD 530 graphics card via the updates, all went well until the restart, the PC restarted & instead of reaching the log in screen I had a black screen, nothing worked, I left things for 5 minutes but it didn't proceed, the hard drive light wasn't lit.

I forced shutdown & started & all seemed OK; I logged in.

My question: Is there a problem with this release?

I've never had this previously.

This happened to me on one of the updates, but it occurred on only one machine and it was with a previous release; not the current. That machine, after a forced reboot, came up just fine and I haven't seen any subsequent issues with it. You are likely ok as well -- but watch it closely for a while...

What release of Windows 10 are you running? 1909?

Have you tried upgrading to the latest version, 27.20.100.8190, available here: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/29557/Intel-Graphics-Windows-10-DCH-Drivers?

Yes I’m on 1909 & running the latest version of the graphics driver.

This has been happening since I originally posted, even a clean install of Windows hasn’t made any difference.

Well, we will need to start from the beginning...

Please download and run the Intel System Support Utility for Windows and save the report to a file. Then, using the paperclip icon below the edit window, upload and attach this file to a response post.

If this is a laptop, the issue may be that there are customizations in the drivers to support the swapping of which graphics engine "owns" the display. If you go back to the drivers provided by the vendor, does the problem clear up? If you then try to update to the latest, does the update work properly then?

Thanks for the suggestion.

When this problem originally started the graphics were updated from the original PCSpecialist disc, they stopped supplying updated drivers so I began downloading from Intel, all was fine until Sept 2018.

I uninstalled the driver via DDU & restarted intending to install the driver from PCSpecialist but the black screen still happened even with Microsoft’s basic display adapter.

What happens exactly is I get the manufacturer’s logo, then a black screen for about 20 seconds, then the blue starting screen then log in screen, once I’ve entered my password I then get another black screen for a few seconds before I see my desktop.

I’m not wondering if this is a Microsoft problem.

Try uninstalling the Microsoft driver and then rebooting.

I doubt it can be removed due to it being the basic driver needed to receive a picture onscreen, otherwise I wouldn’t be able to see anything in order to reinstall.

It can definitely be removed. It will be automatically reinstalled, which is what I want to see happen.

Steps taken:

Uninstalled Intel driver via DDU & restarted the pc which left Microsoft’s basic driver.

Uninstalled the basic driver & restarted. This worked in that there wasn’t a black screen between log in & seeing the desktop.

Installed Intel graphic driver & restarted. The black screen seen between sign in & Desktop returned.

Restarted again & no black screen again.

Restarted a third time & still no black screen.

Checked with Intel driver & support assistant & it states all is up to date however at the bottom of the screen it also says there’s no Intel software installed which I haven’t seen previously.

I’m currently booting yesterday’s image to check this.

Edit: support assistant requests an update which I cannot install within the image.

Are there any issues being identified in Device Manager or the Windows Event Log?

None whatsoever.

The black screens have improved - the one before log in is much shorter & the one after is no longer appearing, I have restarted several times & all is still acceptable.

Support assistant seems to have updated recently which may explain the new message at the end.
