HEVC/H.265 video decoding issue in Intel® HD Graphics 530

I constantly get a video frozen in VLC (both UWP and desktop/legacy/Win64 application) when playing HEVC or H.265 video. I'm currently using the latest drivers (27.20.100.916), and this issue has been present for the past driver versions. When the video freezes, the whole thing both of my screens get frozen too, like if I move my cursor, it wouldn't move. I don't know if the driver itself is crashing due to HEVC video playback.

 

According to this support article, Intel® HD Graphics 530 supports H.265/HEVC decode. Please issue a driver update soon that will fix this issue.

I am sorry for the bad experience when you play HEVC/H.265 videos, but I am glad to let you know that we have a fix for this in our coming driver update. There is no release date, but it is coming soon and my recommendation is just to keep updating your graphics drivers for the next month or two and the fix will be rolled out automatically.



Since this fix is coming soon, I would like to know if it is fine for you if I close this thread.

In order to better assist you, please provide the following:  


  


1. Run the Intel® System Support Utility (Intel® SSU) to gather more details about the system.  


· Download the Intel® SSU and save the application on your computer: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25293/Intel-System-Support-Utility-for-Windows- 

· Open the application, check the "Everything" checkbox, and click "Scan" to see the system and device information. The Intel® SSU defaults to the "Summary View" on the output screen following the scan. Click the menu where it says "Summary" to change to "Detailed View".  

· To save your scan, click Next and click Save.  


  

2. Provide the Report for Intel® Graphics Drivers:

I do appreciate all the information provided, it was very helpful. With the reports, I noticed that your laptop uses an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M, and based on my research looks like this graphics card does not support HEVC/H.265. To confirm if that this is the cause of the problem you can try the following:


1. Disable the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M at the device manager or set the configuration at the NVIDIA control to use only the panel Intel® HD Graphics 530 and try to play the videos again.


2. Update your NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M graphics drivers.


3. Get in contact with NVIDIA or ASUS to check for any limitations on your laptop and/or your graphics card.

I tried disabling NVIDIA GTX 960M, but it's still acting like that. I already tried to set Intel as the GPU rendering device for VLC (desktop application & UWP app), but it still freezes. On the other hand, when I set my GPU rendering device to GTX 960M, it doesn't freeze but it does the video decoding in the CPU instead (because GTX 960M doesn't support hardware accelerated HEVC decoding).

 

2. Update your NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M graphics drivers.

My drivers for GTX 960M is already up-to-date.

3. Get in contact with NVIDIA or ASUS to check for any limitations on your laptop and/or your graphics card.

Unfortunately, I could not get in touch with them anymore about my laptop. They have already discontinued my laptop so I can't receive any support from them anymore.

1. Have you tried to play the same video/movie with another playback app or just VLC? If possible try with a different one

2. If you test with another playback app, please share a video or the result.

  • Yes, I have tried to play the same video/movie with another playback app. I tried playing the same video with MPC-HC and Movies & TV, they work play it just fine.

2. If you test with another playback app, please share a video or the result.

  • Though, regarding MPC-HC & Movies & TV's playback; I don't know if they are playing the video with hardware acceleration (from Intel HD 530) or not. It's just that, when I play HEVC video with those players, task manager shows GPU utilization only on video processing, not with video decoding.

  • To replicate the video decoding/playback issue with VLC, try to play any HEVC/H.265 video. Just let it play for a couple of minutes, and the video should flicker and freeze at some point. (happens all the time, it doesn't just happen sometimes)
