Intel ARC A770 16GB. When HDR is on game-breaking graphics glitches can happen in several games.

I couldn't even complete a level in Shadow of the Tomb Raider and found out after experimenting that the issue happened when HDR is on -although I almost got to the ending having played the entire campaign with HDR enabled-.

I found the culprit in the scene whose screenshot I attached. It's the scene in San Juan after Amaru's helicopter is hit and there is some kind of earthquake.

The screen goes totally black with broad white lines appearing out of nowhere, you can't see a thing, making it impossible to advance and complete the game. There was a moment where a very faint and super dimmed background of what is is supposed to be the game could be seen, but it's so faint it's impossible.

After disabling HDR, bam, everything was working like a charm once again.

It happened in the sceneI got a HDR 1500 TV and I prefer to play with HDR on, it's a totally different experience.

There are many graphical glitches happening when HDR is on, with Lara's hair it seems (EDIT: this happens when HDR is off too), or square set of blue pixels appearing in certain areas.

This affects other games like Jurassic World Evolution 2, which is glitches galore. But I am not sure this is due to HDR. Judgment and Lost Judgment by Sega also seem to have some graphical glitches -the hair is like covered by a halo-, although once again I am not sure that's HDR related.

This GPU is really promising though. I am really loving it so far. Keep up the good work. Cheers!

HDR doesn't work properly in Elden Ring either I've found (you can't activate the in-game menu toggle), but not sure if that's a driver issue, or if the game needs a patch.

it could easily be the game, but I am not completely sure. The HDR of Resident Evil 2 Remake and Resident Evil Village worked fine with my previous GPU, the GTX 1080. On the A770 the HDR toggle is greyed out. Thankfully Auto HDR enables HDR in these games, so it's no so bad, but still puzzling.

There are other games with serious graphics glitches like Jurassic World Evolution 2, where disabling HDR in the OS, did nothing to fix those glitches.

It's still an immature card and it shows. It's my favourite GPU ever, and my first GPU day-one purchase ever too, as I always kinda preferred Intel since my first computer was an Intel one and have had many laptops all with Intel CPUs -with integrated graphics- and I am used to them, but still, it needs some time before all those glitches are ironed out.

Cheers!

For sure, but I've been pleasantly surprised so far with it. It looks nice, wasn't expensive and doesn't chug a gallon of power, and for my primary use case (Linux workstation) it's been really solid and stable since 6.0 Kernel/Mesa 22.2.

For Windows gaming I mainly play Elden Ring, but at 1080p/Max settings it's a locked 60fps and that's fine for me, but hopefully the HDR issues will be ironed out soon.

Regarding the questions:

- No. It doesn't happen with the GTX 1080 for instance, or the GTX 1060 3GB, which are the graphics cards that I have aside from the A770.

- List of games with graphics glitches or that won't launch:

 • Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Hair rendering issues sometimes. The aforementioned issue in this thread. Some fast flickering shadows in very specific areas. Still, the game with XeSS looks almost like a Disney animation movie, totally jaggy-less. Love it.
 • Judgment and Lost Judgment by Sega show an odd halo around the main character's hair. Hair seems to be an issue in some games for the GPU.
 • Games that won't even launch -at least for me, not even trying to run them with DXVK-: Resident Evil 0, Resident Evil HD Remake, Resident Evil 5, Resident Evil 6, Ultimate Capcom vs Marvel 3 and Resident Evil Revelations 2.
 • Resident Evil 4 works fine although it shows graphical glitches, which get fixed if you use DXVK.
 • Fallout 3 launches but once you click in "Start New Game", the game crashes and goes to the desktop. I found no fix to this.
 • Jurassic World Evolution 2, graphics glitches galore.

hello Andres. Thanks for your prompt reply.

First of all, the version of the games is the most recent Steam version. The only non Steam game is Fallout 3, but it's also the most recent version on Epic Store and PC Gamepass -they show the same behaviour-.

1. Judgment pictures. Note the odd halo around the protagonist's hair. Hair seems to be an issue in more than one game.

2. All those games won't even launch at all, so I can't take a picture. Both DXVK and DGVoodoo2 wrappers won't fix that issue either.

3. Fallout 3. Versions I tried: Epic Store's version and PC Gamepass version. Can't attach a picture, because the game crashes once you click on Start New Game. None of the versions work, even if you use DXVK or DGVoodoo2 wrappers.

4. Jurassic World Evolution 2. This one has so many glitches that it becomes unplayable. It happens not only in game but also in the menus. Very strange polygons appear and flicker rapidly everywhere, polygons and vegetation appears and disappears, despite being a DirectX 12 game.

System info file from SSU included as an attachment.

Have a nice day. Best wishes.

many thanks for the reply Andres!

Hope those steps can fix some issues, specially hair issues in certain games -and of course some games not launching or graphical glitches-.

This is an example of the hair issue in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, native 1440p HDR 165Hz monitor, XeSS Quality enabled. At XeSS Ultra Quality the hair issues are not as pronounced, but still they are present, it seems to be somewhat related to the resolution, the higher it is the less you are going to experience them, but it doesn't matter they will be still present.

This a screengrab I got in Shadow of the Tomb Raider showing the hair issue behaving very similarly to Judgment and Lost Judgment videogames, which have a similar issue although not as glitches prone:

(the image looks less vibrant due to HDR to SDR tonemapping performed by Steam screen capture, but that's besides the point)

Very similar pic but no hair issues

Shall test performing a BIOS and graphics driver update and will get back to you.

Best regards.

tested again with the new drivers and the bios update. I even ended up installing W11 again from scratch -I just use this partition for gaming-.

The result is the same -note Lara's hair looks flat and those square darker areas where there should be hair, those are flickering squares)

Have a nice day and thanks again for the help.

this is very puzzling. Now all the games that didn't launch at all, the aforementioned Resident Evil 0, Resident Evil HD Remake, Resident Evil 5, Resident Evil 6, Ultimate Capcom vs Marvel 3 and Resident Evil Revelations 2, all of them run fine. 😀

I suspect the culprit has to do with using the HDMI 2.1 port from the TV (a 4K 120Hz one (connected to a native HDMI 2.1 cable).

That's the only difference, along with the fact that I couldn't enable VRR on my TV via HDMI 2.1 and now that I am using my 1440p 165Hz 32" HDR500 monitor -which I really like to play on- using a Displayport 1.4 cable, I have Adaptive Sync and those games work like a charm! 😊

Also there are no glitches in Resident Evil 4 anymore and didn't have to use DXVK to fix them. In fact, I didn't use DXVK at all this time.

Might it be the only cause? Sure I switched to a new driver (but there is no indication of fixes of any type), but so did I when I had the computer connected to the TV and not to my monitor and the new driver didn't fix anything.

Which leaves with how a regular Displayport cable and Adaptive Sync work perfectly fine with this GPU, but not HDMI 2.1. 🤔 Excuse me if I am wrong.

Resident Evil 0 Remake

Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3

Resident Evil 6

Resident Evil Revelations (RE Revelations 2 also works very well, but I couldn't get a picture)

Resident Evil 4 -which always launched and ran very well ever since I played it, but without DXVK it showed entire areas of black textures all around the scenery)

p.s. Fallout 3 still won't get past the main screen when you click on "Start New Game".

It's not a native HDMI 2.1 port unfortunately though, it's converted from DP via LSPCON.

This is why we're not seeing the option to select 10/12bit color etc in the Intel Graphics Command Center:

https://github.com/IGCIT/Intel-GPU-Community-Issue-Tracker-IGCIT/issues/179

Definitely a shame that, and could be a reason why HDR switching is having issues on some games (e.g. Elden Ring), and often I have to switch between Fullscreen and Borderless Windowed modes to get the correct colorspace to stick.

many thanks for the reply @powerarmour  ! That kinda tells the whole story. Btw, does VRR work for you when you connect the graphics card to your TV via HDMI 2.1? Just curious...

It's impossible for me, I can't get VRR to work. There is no handshake between the TV and the GPU and the nice Adaptive Sync options I get when I connect the GPU to my 165Hz 1440p monitor are totally gone when I connect the TV.

Btw, confirmed.... When on the TV via HDMI 2.1, any time I try to launch Resident Evil 0, Resident Evil HD Remake, Resident Evil 6, Ultimate Capcom vs Marvel 3 and Resident Evil Revelations 1 and 2, the initial splash screen lasts less than half a second before the game closes and will never launch. 🤔

On my monitor via Displayport, not only I get the lovely Adaptive Sync but also those games launch perfectly fine and run like a dream.

Is there any way to fix HDMI 2.1 and VRR, Intel @Andres_Intel  ?

I don't have a HDMI 2.1 TV to test unfortunately, it 'should' work (i.e. VRR is part of official HDMI 2.1 spec, just not <HDMI 2.0 which is AMD/FreeSync specific), otherwise VRR obviously works as it should via DisplayPort connections.

Although it's not a native HDMI 2.1 port, it should hopefully be fixable though as Intel have offered LSPCON FW updates in the past on other devices to correct similar issues (usually the NUC's).

(I've now added my Elden Ring bug report separately here: https://community.intel.com/t5/Intel-ARC-Graphics/Game-Bug-Elden-Ring-HDR/m-p/1431858#M353)

In addition, hair issues in Judgment are gone when playing on my monitor at 1440p and XeSS Quality.

on a different note, a framerate limiter in the graphics card settings menu could be a good idea. I have a 165Hz screen and I limit it to 60 on Windows for most games, yet Shadow of the Tomb Raider gives me readings of 130-140fps when set to Exclusive Fullscreen.

Hello laxesta,

Thank you for your answer,

Happy to hear that most of the games are working correctly.

Related to the Adaptive Sync option @powerarmour is right, DisplayPort cable must be used (HDMI is not currently being supported).

To try to solve the VRR and Fallout 3 issue, please follow the step below:

 • Last week we released a new beta driver 31.0.101.3802 access the links below to download it and follow the installation process:

Driver:

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/download/729157/intel-arc-graphics-windows-dch-driver-beta.html

Steps:

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000005629/graphics.html

After performing the previous steps let me know if you are able to use VRR and play the rest of the games without issues.

FWIW the HDMI port shouldn't be referred to as 2.1 compatible then, as VRR will be expected for this connection.

Misleading specs/packaging issue here otherwise, some folks will justifiably wish to return the product based on that.

and I wouldn't blame them. I've seen the port named as "HDMI 2.1" port everywhere in the best techie sites.

My TV is not a paperweight now but almost. It works well, but I purchased a 4K 120Hz TV and a HDMI 2.1 cable to use with the A770 and while I really love the GPU overall, the lack of VRR makes some games kinda jerky to play and I miss a lot in games with intense combat scenes, which doesn't happen on my monitor. So I am still playing on the monitor but I really prefer using the TV by far, the IQ is much better and it has a larger display, etc.

Hello Andres_Intel.

The driver you mention is the one I have already installed. When I connect the computer to the TV I use the native HDMI 2.1 port of the TV -HDMI port 4, in my particular TV model-.

I shall try once again later but things might not change. The list of other games not working just because the computer is connected to the monitor via HDMI 2.1 but work like a charm when it is connected to the monitor is also very puzzling.

Question is..., is this issue fixable via drivers? I hope so.
