Intel Arc on VMware

Hi,

 

Its been a while.  I'm back writing some new encoder/decoder impls for Intel inside our software stack.

 

After reading this support article, my understanding is Intel Arc cards can be passed-through on VMware and QuickSync/OneAPI facilities can thereby be used inside the VM for video encode/decode.  Is that correct?  I have struggled with my NVIDIA impl in this regard.  I don't think consumer card (GeForce) passthrough is fully supported.  At least I keep getting a code 43 from it, so I'm looking for an alternative in consumer card price range to ship with our products.

Hello RobinsonUK,

 

Thank you very much for your patience. After a deep look into this, we can confirm that the virtualization of GPU only applies to the FLEX series GPUs and not to Arc GPUs. The Arc GPUs are mentioned because of their AV1 capabilities. As stated in this article, Arc Desktop does not support virtualization.

 

We comprehend that the wording of this article may not be precise enough and can cause some confusion, so expect an update very soon.

 

We also recommend you contact VMWare for more details and a complete understanding of this tool.
