Hi there,
I plugged in a 2nd extension monitor via USB - VGA adaptor, updated the Intel Graphics Card driver and got the monitor to work only on 800 x 600.
For some reason I am unable to change the resolution as this is greyed out.
I swapped over with the other monitor and both have the same effect, thus leading me to conclude that this problem only exists for the 2nd monitor.
Can someone help? 1 of my monitor is plugged into the VGA socket, the other is plugged into the USB - VGA adaptor.

Hello KimHwee,
First of all, please note Intel does not support or recommend the usage of adapters, due to the fact that video signal can be affected by the conversion from one end to the other.
With that said, I have some things to check in order to find the possible source of the issue.
1. What happens if you use a VGA to VGA connection from your monitor to the PC?
2. Have you tried different cables?
3. Which are the resolutions you are currently using with the system?
Finally, it would be great to have further information about your system in order to review the configuration you have. This can be easily achieved with the Intel SSU report.
How can you get this report?
-Access: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25293/Intel-System-Support-Utility https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25293/Intel-System-Support-Utility
-Download the utility
-Scan your system with the utility
-Export the report (hit next and then save) and attach it to your answer with the advanced editor option (reply button and then check upper right corner)

1. VGA to to VGA connection is ok, but I only have 1 VGA port.
2. I have yet to try different HDMI cables. But when I swapped my monitors around, the 800 to 600 resolution reminds on my USB - VGA connection.
3. Mobile PC Display is 1336 x 768, Monitor 2 (which is successfully connected by my HDMI - VGA adaptor is 1024 x 768.
New scenario:
Monitor 1 is my mobile pc display.
Monitor 2 is a HP L1706
Monitor 3 is a Samsung Syncmaster 931BF
I tried to use both my HDMI and VGA ports at the same time, Monitor 2 is a successful connection through a HDMI - VGA adaptor.
Monitor 3, is a direct VGA connection that cannot work now, although my graphics card still detects this monitor but I am unable to connect it.
I've also attached the XML file after running the utility you mentioned.

This information is straight from the Configuration 3-Displays FAQ page. For the Intel HD 4000 to actually support the three independent display configuration, the following criteria need to be met:
- If two of the displays are DisplayPort* monitors
- If one of the displays is an Intel® Wireless Display (Intel® WiDi)
- If the built-in display is an Embedded DisplayPort1 (eDP) not a LVDS
So for my VGA monitor 2 to work with a HDMI monitor 3 to work with my laptop display monitor 1, i need my monitor 3 to be a displayport monitor, and a HDMI to displayport adaptor?
I'm lost here.

You have an unsupported configuration for 3 display to work properly, since I'm pretty sure the Dell Latitude E6230 built-in display is LVDS and not eDP.

Hi there,
I have the USB - VGA adapter driver.
Does the type of driver affect the resolution of the adapter? If so, this could be the tech specs of the adapter creating this problem (mine is a generic one).

The adapter is the one we cannot assure is going to work as expected (set correct resolution), if you have the option, test it with an active adapter 🙂

I'm assuming your USB to VGA adapter is like one of these: https://www.startech.com/ca/AV/USB-Video-Adapters/USB-VGA-Multi-Monitor-Video-Adapter~USB2VGAE2 https://www.startech.com/ca/AV/USB-Video-Adapters/USB-VGA-Multi-Monitor-Video-Adapter~USB2VGAE2
That style of adapter requires a non-Intel driver to function properly. Search around the USB to VGA adapter manufacturers' page for the appropriate driver.
