Intel Ultra 265k Hardware Decoding/Encoding: Poor Performance on Windows 11 24H2

Hello everyone! When I try to watch any video (Youtube or any file with any quality higher than HD), the Intel hardware acceleration is very slow (in task manager full load video decoding). When I use OBS to record with hardware QSC, I have the same problem. I am using the latest Intel display driver and the latest BIOS for my MSI Z890 GAMING PLUS WIFI motherboard. My OS version is Windows 11 24H2. Why is this decoding so slow?

Hello alex_golostos,

Thank you so much for patiently waiting on our response.

For a possible solution, please try to update your BIOS to the latest one:

And if the issue still persists, please let me know so we can further investigate the issue.

Any news on this issue? I have the same problem - for example, 4K videos on YouTube are unplayable, both in Chrome and Firefox. Is this a hardware issue (CPU, chipset?), or a driver issue? Are all 265K CPUs affected? If not, can we RMA our units, and get a fully working 265K unit? If it's a driver or BIOS issue, are you working on a driver or a BIOS update, and what is the ETA? My motherboard is MSI MAG Z890 TOMAHAWK WIFI.

I have the exact same issue.  It appears to be an issue with the iGPU when running memory near XMP settings. I've tried 2 different pairs of DIMMs in my Asrock Z890i motherboard with multiple BIOS revisions, including the latest that supports 200S boost released a day ago. With both 8400 MT (G.Skill CUDIMMs) and 8800 MT (Teamgroup CUDIMMs), I had to drop to 7800 MT to get rid of the symptoms: playing local videos in Media Player and DaVinci Resolve, watching Youtube videos causes the GPU % to go to 100% and the videos stutter.

I have the latest Intel WHQL graphics driver (have tried several older versions too) and performed system and memory diagnostics that find no hardware issues.

Minutes after posting ^ I got an alert that there's a new graphics driver (32.0.101.6737 WHQL).  The release notes include:

"Video playback on external display may experience intermittent freeze while performing certain operations."

After installing the new driver, the issue APPEARS to have been resolved. When running at full XMP speeds (8800 MT) I get no stuttering.

I spoke too soon ☹️  After rebooting the issue is back. The new driver is still being used.

Same problem with MSI Pro Z890-A WiFi, I can't even use XMP (6400 MT) with my 2x48GB memory, otherwise 4K video playback or 1080p QSV video encoding will be overloaded and drop 50% or more frame. Even 6000 MT doesn't work. I have to use the default 5600 MT.

I am using G.SKILL Ripjaws S5 DDR5-6000 CL36 memory with an MSI MAG B860M Mortar WiFi motherboard. When I enable XMP, the same problem occurs. The issue is only resolved when I disable XMP, completely power off the computer, wait a moment, and then restart it.

The BIOS is also the latest version, and the Intel graphics driver is also the latest version.

It seems, even with CUDIMMs in a mini ITX board with 2 DIMM slots, it's often not possible to run with XMP timings.  I've read that all 265K IMCs are not created equal. I ended up having to drop my 2x24GB 8800 MT Teamgroup CUDIMMs down to 7800MT.  Running at anything above 7800 caused iGPU issues. By booting to a USB thumb and running Memtest86, I eventually tracked it down to general RAM issues and not specifically issues with the iGPU. Anything above 7800/XMP (8800) returned RAM errors.  I managed to tighten up the timings (compared with the XMP 8800 profile).

I'm hoping that a future BIOS update might allow me to run at XMP but I'm not holding my breath.  For now, 7800 at 36-46-46-56 is working without issue for me and it seems I don't lose too much performance from XMP 8800.
