Intel display drivers cause lines on screen after screen replacement

Hi,

I had to replace the screen on my laptop as it was broken and after starting back up the screen had lines and blank sections on it, see below pic.

Thinking it was a faulty screen, I had it replaced with one from another manufacturer but still had the same problem. After much trial and error, I have found that if I remove the integrated intel display adapter driver, or roll it back to the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter then the screen works fine except that I am unable to change the brightness and the refresh rate is stuck at 60Hz.

I have tried both the Intel driver that MyAsus tells me to install, version 31.0.101.3413 and the driver that ID&SA tells me to install, version 31.0.101.4644. Both give me the same problem and each time I have to roll back to the Microsoft Basic DA to fix the issue.

Originally, Windows 11 was installed. Windows 10 is now installed to see if it cured the problem but it didn't. I am thinking that it may be a BIOS setting or something that changed when power was drained to replace the original screen.

 Attached is a System report/specs

TIA for any help, it's much appreciated

I've replaced two screens (same brand model (BOE)) and have the same result. I didn't replace the cable but he did and didn't solve the problem. I'm starting to believe this BOE display is not suitable for this configuration or a faulty batch. But why is working with Windows generic drivers and not Intel? That's why I was curious if he installed the same display brand. The display that came with the laptop was a Sharp but can't find one and Asus refuses to supply one. £1400 laptop, black screen after two years, and Asus refuses to supply parts. All the best for this brand.

Hi Madox,

The first replacement screen was a BOE that I sourced from laptop-lcd-screen.co.uk. This was the only place that I could find on the internet that had a 240hz screen. I contacted them about the issue and they said it was a driver problem, Intel say it is a hardware problem and ASUS say "Sorry, your device is out of warranty. Therefore, we cannot help you".

The second screen that my local laptop repair guy, with 30 years experience in the industry, sourced was definitely not a BOE. I think it was a Sharp, but can't remember for sure. The original screen is a Sharp, like yours. He also replaced the cable, but that didn't work either. I heard that there are only a few manufacturers of LCD screens and that other companies buy from them and then stick their badge on.

I can get the BOE to work by disabling or uninstalling the Intel drivers, but I cannot change the brightness and refresh rate is stuck at 68hz with the default drivers. I bought a 240 hz laptop for a reason and I don't really want it running at 68 hz.

When you replaced yours, did you remove the battery and drain the power with the power switch as is recommended? I did and am wondering if this caused an issue.

I see that ASUS no longer make TUF gaming series laptops with 240 hz screens and the only 240 hz laptops are the ROG series with 16" screens or bigger. This throws up a red flag for me, technology generally moves forward, not backwards. I wonder if they they know there is a problem. One of the reasons I bought this laptop was the phrases 'TUF Gaming' and 'Military grade durability' in the advertising. I travel a lot and therefore wanted something robust. Was surprised when I first unboxed it and saw that the screen is actually quite flimsy. It's not what I would call military grade. For me, this is bordering on false advertising. I'm pretty sure my next laptop won't be an ASUS.

@AlHill

You say take the issue or get the laptop repaired by ASUS. We have and they don't want to know. Do you know if they have a repair center for out of warranty laptops? If so, do you have their contact details?

@Pompui    Sorry, I really do not understand what it is you want.  If asus will not provide you with a proper replacement screen, and if you are unable to obtain a proper replacement screen, then how can Intel help you?

The issue for you to consider is to take the laptop to a recycle facility and be done with this.   Or, look for THE SAME laptop on that auction site and purchase it just to salvage the screen.

I am done with this conversation.

Hi Pompui

Thank you for your reply and detailed info.

I also bought the display from laptop-lcd-screen and it looks like this BOE model is not suitable for this laptop.

I contacted Asus UK Tel: 01442265548 but they asked me to send the laptop and pay £45 + shipping to diagnose and quote me for repair. I asked them for a quote by phone for a screen replacement but they refused to tell me. I don't want to spend £60-£70 only to quote me £400-£500 for a screen replacement.

They gave me a third-party Asus parts supplier  Zandparts and I'm waiting for a quote.

I don't have a problem using a lower refresh rate as long as it works but uninstalling Intel drivers and using Microsoft Basic Display Adapter will not allow me to connect an external monitor, which is a priority for me.

Yes, I disconnected the battery when installing the new BOE display.

Very disappointed with Asus and Intel to be honest. Had three AMD laptops with no issue. This is my first Intel-based laptop and the last. I know they try to be better than AMD but this struggle comes with a cost that I need to pay...

I would downgrade to 144Hz but I'm not sure what screen to choose

I'll keep you updated.

Hi there

Maybe the adapter at the back of you screen panel might Be inserted incorrectly. Re-plug the back panel adapter. If this wont work maybe your screen panel does not support it.
