UHD 730 crashes with Figma and WebGL

Similar to closed thread Figma on Intel UHD 730 - Intel Community, there is a consistent issue with Figma's webGL rendering causing a driver fault (igdkmdn64.sys_GEN12LP_DX10_BBHANG)

the issue has been reported to Figma here, and Chromium here.  You can reproduce it by opening https://www.figma.com/file/vgXHjyeXVlGVAtTRarERCV/Landing-Page-Website---Level-Up-Your-Business-(Community)?node-id=0%3A1

Windows Error Reporting shows the following event log entry whenever I hit this issue:

Fault bucket LKD_0x141_Tdr:6_IMAGE_igdkmdn64.sys_GEN12LP_DX10_BBHANG, type 0
Event Name: LiveKernelEvent

I see the Chromium folks are trying to determine if they can change their WebGL implementation to avoid the crash, but it seems like the true fix should be in the Intel driver.

Thanks Andrew.  I see that Chromium folks at https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=1253941 have assigned the bug to an Intel employee, Xinghua (email address is redacted, xingh...@intel.com), so don't want to create duplicate work, but it will be great to keep track of it here in the Intel forum and have your updates on an ETA to investigate and resolve.

Hello Jmz

Thank you for your response and for the information about the bug assignation to Xinghua, we will double-check this internally.

In the meantime, we would like to inform you that we tested this in our lab following the "reproduction steps" on the chromium forum* and we believe we were able to replicate the behavior. During the lab, the content is lost and only a black background is visible using Google* Chrome and Figma* app; however, it works fine if we disable Hardware Acceleration. We also noticed that the issue is not present on Firefox* browser.

Please kindly take a look at these videos showing our tests. Please let us know if we reproduced the behavior following the proper steps and if this is also the behavior that you experience. If we are missing any steps, please let us know.

This is the environment we used for the lab:

  • Intel® Core™ i7-11700K Processor with Intel® UHD Graphics 750
  • Latest Intel® generic Graphics driver available 30.0.100.9864
  • Motherboard ASUS* ROG STRIX Z590-E GAMING WIFI
  • 16GB RAM
  • Windows 10 Pro Build 19043 (latest updates installed).
  • Chrome Versions 94.0.4606.71 and 94.0.4606.81
  • Firefox version 93.0
  • Figma* app (latest version available at their website)

Note:

We also tried to reproduce following the steps available on the other Intel® Community forum that you shared; however, we are not sure if we reproduced the behavior since we didn't notice any issue or lost content. Nevertheless, we are also sharing the video for that test:

Intel UHD 750 Figma Test 2 - Chrome HW Acceleration enabled inconclusive result...

However, we believe that the previous videos are enough to move forward. Please let us know your thoughts.

Thank you Andrew, your video "test 1-1" is an accurate reproduction of the issue I am experiencing (I do not have the Figma app, so I am running the browser and get the same behavior you recorded around the 1:55 mark in the video).  I expect you will also find, if you open the Windows Event Viewer, and application event from Windows Error Reporting confirming that live kernel detection identified a stall in the video driver.

Intel latest graphics driver (30.0.100.9955) has fixed this issue for UHD 750 gpu.

With older driver (30.0.100.9864), the crash happens again.

I've checked and everything works fine now.

@AndrewG_Intel , I could still reproduce this issue on latest version, 30.0.101.1069. Could you also test the case again? Thank you.

@AndrewG_Intel  We also find the internal driver bug issue which partially fix the problem(But regression in latest Intel graphics driver 30.0.101.1069). We could cc you in that issue if you'd like to follow up
