dGPU Switch and Freeze Problem

Hi,

there is a problem with laptops which have Intel CPU + GTX 1050/1050Ti/1060/1070/GT 640M. The problem is, whenever you try to do some action on the OS, discrete GPU is triggered and it causes a 0.5s freeze.

Some actions, which cause the dGPU to wake up and lock up the whole system for about 0,5 seconds are:

  • Left click on battery-icon in task-bar
  • Opening Chrome-browser
  • Opening Windows Image Viewer (app + classic Foto viewer)
  • Opening system control panel
  • Provocation any animation on task bar (e.g. thumbnail-preview, ...)
  • Loading a new tab in Firefox

Here is a video demonstrating Display Setting Freeze:

Another video showing dGPU switch on a lot of simple tasks:

Another one:

We have tried updating every software possible, but no luck.

  • NVIDIA driver

The problem can be found on all laptop brands: ASUS, Acer, Clevo, Dell, Gigabyte, HP, Lenovo, MSI, Razer. The problem can be solved by either disabling Intel GPU, which forces the system to always work with NVIDIA, or disabling NVIDIA GPU. Both of them is not an option though, as if you disable Intel, not only you will drain the battery faster, but also some games will stop working. If you disable NVIDIA, then what is the point of buying a laptop with a discrete GPU?There is a also a workaround: configuring https://github.com/jobeid/TrayPwrD3 TrayPwrD3 to always work with NVIDIA in the backgound. This keeps the NVIDIA GPU alive but also drains battery faster. And there is no poaint in that as it renders Optimus useless! So, manufacturers have to come up with a fix.Thank you.

Hello folks,

Thank you for your patience while we investigated this further. I understand the frustrations caused by this issue and apologize for the inconvenience it may be bringing you. By now, most of you have installed our latest graphics driver (https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/27650 15.65.5.4982) and seen the right-click desktop issue resolved (and some other right-click stutters as well).

After implementing the code change, we noticed there were some remaining right-click stutters happening in various areas of the OS experience and that's what we've been investigating until now; we wanted to be very clear if we were still contributing to them. We've now concluded that we are not, we're only in the stack 1 millisecond which is acceptable and the remaining time is from other parties and the three others in the stack, to the best of my knowledge are aware, investigating, and treating this with high priority.

This concludes Intel's investigation so I'm now considering this thread closed, though Intel will remain in communication with the other parties to assist in any way we can should they desire.

Special thanks to coolrecep for reporting this and all the others helping with config details and testing so we could improve our drivers as quickly as possible. We value all of your contributions.

Unfortunately, no. It kinda looks like solving the problem but after a while, it's all the same. Good try thoug. I was able to see a driver dated 1970... Weird...

All Macbook works with intel .

Anyway, i have a friend with an asus rog GL553VD, with intel 630 and gtx 1050, but he has this version of drivers:

  • Intel 21.20.16.4550
  • Nvidia 21.21.13.7654

Last version windows 10 1709 and runs very smooth, without freez tested by me

UPDATE:

I try those driver on my hp omen 15, but does not resolve the problem...

Guess what? AMD laptops are on the way

And I'm aware, some laptops with GTX 1050 Ti are not effected. If this turns out to be hardware issue, I advise you guys to go for a class action lawsuit. I'm not in US.

Here is a thing.

Absolutely no reviewers mention that problem. I have watched at least 20 *updated* review videos on decision process. Yet no one was talking that.

You will have no prior info about the bug before you throw thousands of dolars. You realize that your system freezes as hell just after drivers installed and yet there is no other OS supported.

This is a deal-breaker bug. Actually it should not be considered as bug. There should be indignation going on. Optimus laptop with 7th gen should have been stopped selling before this problem resolved.

We really are slaves. We are given no option at all and expected to be accept every inconsisted s**t throwed to us.

Can you confirm that by keeping GPU on (for example using https://github.com/jobeid/TrayPwrD3 TrayPwrD3) then the stutters stop? I know it is not a fix, but at least for now you can use the computer with less frustration.

yes , by selecting to use only dedicated gpu all problems are gone. I didn't use any external tool,i have just selected to use just nVidia card in nVidia control panel, it's a workaround but makes the pc almost pointless in battery mode, too much battery drain. I had this problem since i buy this pc ( around febrary/march of this year ), afther some update things were getting better, but afther Fall creator update this problem showed again, tried to format the pc, clean uninstall/install process with DDUninstaller but nothing. The fix proposed here to avoid freezing when right click on desktop worked ( deleting those registry values, btw thanks a lot for that ), but i still have freezing when press on system icon on start bar ( such audio , wireless, notification center ), when opening a folder or just opening a new tab on firefox browser ( this problem came up only with the last update, v 57, of Firefox ), as far as i can remember this problem is not present in Chrome or Edge.

TrayPwrD3 is supposed to use less resources and battery than NVidia control panel and is easier to start and stop. Thanks for confirming. In addition to the problems you mentioned I also have freezes with MS Office: when starting a powerpoint slideshow and when outlook checks mail. Also occurs when desktop changes background. Hope this helps.

Hi all,

Just wanted to let you know this was filed internally (bug# 1406598524) and we're investigating; it's been replicated and is currently being debugged.

I'll share more when it becomes available.

Good day sir,

Do you happen to have any updates regarding this issue as I am getting fairly annoyed by this stutter right now. It is not just visible in the settings panel but literally everywhere. Whenever you open chrome, control panel, photoshop, anything that uses your GPU. As a web designer / programmer / Agile Web Developer this is getting very annoying!

The best Christmas present would basically be a fix for this horrifying issue.

Thanks for your efforts in advance.

REPLICATED? Just go to random store and buy random laptop with nvidia and intel...

So what would you tell me to do:

I bought laptop (MSI GP72MVR 7700hq and 1060 6gb) few days ago and problem is as everybody says. It freezes. In my case turning on chrome, mozilla or for example nvidia experience program (it stops when nvidia off, but persist if intel off), right clicks are okay. Also battery icon which is just ridiculous. For me it is brand new hardware-good but software-broken product. I called the store and they have many complaints about this problem and they cannot guarantee to find a similar product but without this flaw that as we know persist through the years.

Despite the nature of this error be the one company among nvidia and microsoft who will just step back and fit your soft to repair it. I cannot see how your are missing potential to gain with repairing it as marketing stunt. Unbelivable.

And for the rest of you finally. Stop buying this malfunctioning trash produced by ignorant company. I am returning mine. This is the only way to force them to repair this bug. If you keep buying it it is like "theres a bug but they are still buying stuff because they think it will be soon repaired despite it took few years already, just push the deadline".

Question for the rest: Do you have any idea of laptop with similar spec but without such problems? AMD + AMD maybe? O am I bound to buy just a PC becaue of this absolutely atrocious ignorance?

My last device was with Radeon and it was fairly good without any problem of sort. Before last one I had nvidia one and it had the problem and it was 5(!) years ago. What is the chance that something changes in "march/april"? What a corp clown.

I am preparing some emails for the many brand electronics media to put an agenda about not the bug especially but ignorance of intel.

Thank you for attention, and goodbye.

This is an issue with Windows Fall Creator 1709.

Downgrading to 1703 works and no lag or stutter.

I have tested every possible solution and workaround. Using Fall Creator 1703 does not cause issue. Fall Creator 1709 is the culprit.

If Intel can debug and compare 1703 and 1709, that would be helpful!
