fn Brightness Key dosent work for latest version of intel HD driver

Hello eveyone.

I have a annoying problem in latest version of intel HD 520 driver for WIN10 64 bit (OS has latest updates and many other devices).

My laptop is ASUS K501UX and when i Updated my driver to latest version [ 15.65.4.4944 ] The (fn Brightness Key) disabled suddenly but other fn keys working correctly. before this update everything is OK and Brightness key worked correctly.

So, clearly results & logic shows that this problem is from latest version of intel driver that i mentioned above. not from my laptop, OS or other devices.

Please fix this problem that may annoying many people in the world that has same issue but dont talking about it at this forum.

thanks

My laptop is Asus, so I don't really want to test drivers from Clevo support page

For those who own a Clevo W65xKK/KJ1, version 23.20.16.4849 is installing without and is correctly recognized by Windows.

Brightness control is working.

I think we are out of luck until asus releases an update for ATK package

I searched a bit and no laptop with kaby lake R Asus laptop has a graphic driver more recent than the 4901 driver.

My theory is that intel changed something, and asus is too lazy to update atk package :

For the GL703, a new coffee lake laptop, Asus doesn't offer the full ATK package anymore, just a small part of it that allows the brightness control to work with the newer intel drivers called ASUS Keyboard hotkeys Driver V2.0.2.0. Download link : http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/GamingNB/GL703GE/ASUS_Keyboard_Hotkeys_Driver_V2020.zip http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/GamingNB/GL703GE/ASUS_Keyboard_Hotkeys_Driver_V2020.zip

It doesn't work on my laptop though.

So until asus finally updates ATK package we are out of luck

The update 1803 of Windows 10 is the problem. On my HP Pavillion dm4 1265dx (intel Graphics HD) the bright function stopped worked out too, and I had to return to version 1709 of Windows 10 to recover.

All drivers > .4901 were causing the brightness keys to stop functioning even on Windows 10 1709.

Hey Intel, seriously, get you s**t together.

On the one hand, I'm quite happy, that Intel provides current drivers (as the manufacturer is too lazy and ships ancient driver versions from 2016, same goes for m$). So thanks Intel for that service !

On the other hand, we've got spectre/meltdown and Intel was basically leading in benchmarks (compared to AMD) b/c they screwed with security. And now it takes forever, until all hardware/firmware is updated ...

Anyway, back to the topic, I've got the same problem with the graphics drivers & not working brightness hotkeys.

Machine is Asus G501VW.

OS is Win 10.

@blacklord, I can confirm your findings regarding the driver versions:

Everything worked on W10 - 1709 with drivers win64_154519.4678 and the last one win64_15.60.2.4901

while win64_15.65.3.4944 had problems with hotkeys !

Now with W10 - 1803 the same: worked with win64_15.60.2.4901

current win64_24.20.100.6094 : again Problems with hotkeys !

regards

p.s.

And yeah, I think it's an Intel driver issue, as there were no problems with drivers <=4901 and the hotkey problems started *only after* installing a new Intel graphics driver version. So I conclude something changed in the Intel driver. (Maybe there is some compatibility issue with the machine, I don't know the inner workings of this all, but the change was on the Intel driver side.)

Fixed it by patching DSDT...

So guys you need to wait for BIOS update.

I had a similar problem on an old HP Envy 14 laptop with an Intel Core i5-450M processor (1st gen Intel HD Graphics, meaning no proper Windows 10 drivers or driver updates since 2016). The problem was solved by changing the following registry in Windows 10:

1. Make a backup of Windows 10's registry. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/322756/how-to-back-up-and-restore-the-registry-in-windows https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/322756/how-to-back-up-and-restore-the-registry-in-windows

2. In Windows start search box, type in regedit and hit Enter.

3. Navigate to one of the following keys to find the item mentioned in 4.:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0000

or

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0001

4. Double-click the item of FeatureTestControl, set the hexadecimal value to "fb20", and click OK.

5. Reboot your computer to reflect the changes.

Please be aware and read!

1. After this edit, selecting the lowest level of brightness, will turn OFF your screen.

2. Selecting the power mode "Best battery life" in Windows 10 while on battery, will turn OFF your screen.

3. Windows 10 switching to the power mode "Best battery life" upon unplugging the charger, will turn OFF your screen.

4. The screen can be turned back ON in all of the situations mentioned in 1-3. by simply turning up the brightness via your laptops FN + xx keyboard shortcut, to the next lowest level of brightness.

This solution seems a bit tricky. I saw that Clevo released a 1.05.13 BIOS for my laptop but it's hard to get it because they only give them to resellers.

I think it's a mild operation compared to all the other things the supporters at Microsoft's community suggested I should try. But it works for me and a lot of other people.

Yes it is, but it didn't work for me. It also destroyed Standby. I coulndn't start my Laptop again.

If you are using Mac & Windows dual boot, its really easy to generate a fixed DSDT using the tools in Mac and using Clover to load the modified DSDT in Windows.

THANKS !!!!

This worked also with my TECRA A10 11M with Intel chipset 4 and integrated graphics within driver

Drivers (Video) 11/3/2013 Version 8.15.10.2702 - 9,2 MB

Before this registry change to fb20 (original value at FeatureTest-key was 0000200) the slider and the other brightness controls was there, but without any effect.

Hey guys,

I had the same problem, All of the sudden my laptop's brightness key stopped working. I think the problem is not with the Intel HD graphics driver problem is with Generic PnP Monitor driver. Just got Generic PnP Monitor under the Device Manager and Update the driver. It worked for me, Hope it'll work for you guys as well.

Hi guys,

I found a newer BIOS for my Clevo W650KJ1, 1.05.13, combined with EC 1.05.08. Latest drivers version 24.20.100.6094 are working with fn keys.

Thank you for your time

I've tested ATK 1.0.0060 earlier, it doesn't help.

I saw that asus provided a new intel driver (4973) for a laptop that has atk v60, so brightness control won't work.

https://www.asus.com/us/2-in-1-PCs/ASUS-ZenBook-Flip-14-UX461UN/HelpDesk_Download/ ASUS ZenBook Flip 14 UX461UN | 2-in-1 PCs | ASUS USA

So they are pushing a buggy update to a recent laptop, it's laughable.. On the other hand I tried to install the new atk v2020 but it won't launch...

So annoying

Finally!

The latest 24.20.100.6136 fixes the issue.

Brightness keys are working again on my Asus UX501VW, no changes to bios or registry required.
