Crash to Desktop in Forza Horizon 5

I've been experiencing crashes with Forza Horizon 5 (Microsoft Store version) and I thought I might share what I've discovered in the hope that this issue can be tracked down.  I'm using an Intel Arc A770M card with the 31.0.101.4369 driver.  My system is a new NUC12 Enthusiast Kit running a fresh installation of Windows 10.  Resizable BAR is enabled and there are no error messages associated with the crashes.

I'm getting crashes when starting races and when backing out of the beginning menu to start driving.  I've found that the GPU does not like the Multi Sample Anti-Alias graphic setting in the game.  The default setting established by running an in-game benchmark for this is x2.  If I change this setting to OFF, the crashes don't happen, or at least haven't happened so far.  Obviously, this isn't the greatest solution because turning MSAA off makes the game look worse, but maybe somebody could test that and see if the crash is reproducible.

Oh, and the Event Viewer shows that, immediately before the crash, the 'Display driver igfxnd stopped responding and has successfully recovered.' This event is followed by the crash of ForzaHorizon5.exe.

Hopefully this information is helpful. I sure would like to have it resolved.  Let me know if I can help in any way.

Thanks,

Mark

Hello IndigoNeon,

Thank you for your patience and time.

I see you have installed the graphics driver version 31.0.101.4672 and 31.0.101.4676, however, we need to install them one more time because a clean installation of the graphics with DDU was not done, so please follow the steps below and let me know the results:

  1. Clean install the graphics driver following the article How to Use the Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) to Uninstall an Intel® Graphics Driver.
  2. Install the graphics driver 31.0.101.4672.

If the issue persists repeat the steps but this time with the driver 31.0.101.4676.

Lastly, if the issue still persists, repeat the steps one more time, but this time with our latest driver released yesterday version 31.0.101.4824.

Let me know the results

I did a clean installation of all three drivers and the crashes still occur.  I didn't experience any difference in when or how the crash occurred.  As long as MSAA is turned on, the game will crash.

Hello IndigoNeon,

Thank you for your time.

We have been working on the investigation, based on all our tests we have ruled out a driver issue at this point (we tested the drivers several times and couldn't get the game to crash) and given the fact the game worked fine before the OS reinstallation then it must be an isolated issue with your current system configuration. Check with the game dev for additional support perhaps corrupted OS or game files.

I can verify that MSAA also causes crashing for me and it has been that way in other games as well (like Watch Dogs 2).

Issues related to MSAA have been present for me since I bought my Arc A770 in December 2022.

If you can enable FXAA and TAA use those ones as they are both very stable on this card.

I usually just avoid MSAA altogether since the performance cost is high anyways.

Yeah, that's probably my best option.  I've talked to other users who have had crashing with MSAA and that's what they do too.  I've been mostly using TAA lately, and haven't had any problems with it.  I find it strange that Support can't replicate the problem, as it seems to be a well-known issue, but I guess a work-around will have to do.  Thanks!
