Ratchet and Clank

I've got an MSI Claw Ultra 7 and bought Ratchet and Clank: Rifts Apart on Steam. However, every time I try to load the game up I get an error message for the game using more video memory than what the system can support. This makes no sense? Is this a hardware issue, software issue or a game issue?

Hi Jmet95,

Thank you for posting in Intel Communities.

I wish I can answer your question right away. To answer your question, we may need to further check the matter and the information that you will provide, would be vital to determine what is causing the issue:

1. It would really help us if we can get more information about your system. Please download and run our Intel® System Support Utility from this page. To run it, please press "Scan". After the scan is finished, click next and there will be a save button, giving you an option to save the logs to a text file, please do so and attach the file on your reply. You can refer to How to get the Intel® System Support Utility Logs on Windows* for instructions.

2. Kindly provide a screenshot of the error.

Looking forward to your response.

I haven't had a chance to run the system checker but I am running the newest Arc graphics driver. This page also won't let me upload a screenshot of the problem but the message reads:

The game has crashed due to using more video memory than youra system can currently support. This could be caused by insufficient space available in your system page file for Windows to manage the video memory in use on your GPU. Please try lowering your graphics settings, lowering your resolution, increasing your Windows page file size, restarting your PC and/or dosing any unnecessary background applications before running the game again.

I have lowered all of the graphics settings in the game to minimum and still having this issue and can't get past the initial boot up.

Hi Jmet95,

Thank you for your response.

I will be sending you an email, so you can easily run the software that we asked plus the reply with the screenshot.

However, can you try the steps outlined on this page, Performance on the MSI Claw* with Intel® Core® Ultra Processors with Built-in Intel® Arc™ graphics. The steps are for performance problems but can potentially help with your concern.

I will be waiting for the results and your email.

Hi all,

I suspect the issue might stem from not enough RAM in that system - MSI lists the Claw A1M-059 as equipped with 16 GB LPDDR5, which I assume is shared between system and GPU.

The game itself seems to require 16 GB of RAM as well as 8 GB of Video Memory (24 GB total), so it might simply not work on this device unless the developer pushes out a fix. It's listed on Steam with a minimum requirement of 8 GB RAM + 4 GB VRAM, but from trying the game on a dedicated A770 16GB I doubt it can run at those minimum requirements at 1920*1080 even on low details. Otherwise runs totally fine, XeSS is not available but that might be due to some missing updates though.

Please try lowering the resolution in the launcher to 1280*720, this may bring the RAM and VRAM requirements down below the recommended threshold; otherwise changing the size of Windows' Paging File might also help.

Sorry for the somewhat disappointing answer, maybe @JMet95 could still post SSU and IGCC logs here.

Best regards,

Just to clarify the memory situation a little - the game might run on 8 GB RAM + 4 GB VRAM, but since there's also some version of Windows 11 and maybe other applications running in the background, those combined 16 GB might just run out.

It's really up to how MSI configured the page file (which they may well have disabled or shrunk to half the system's memory to not stress the SSD too much), so increasing the page file like mentioned above to at least 24 GB might alleviate the problem; the game might still crash or stutter in some intense situations or after playing for extended periods though.
