Open WebRTC Toolkit (OWT) now on GitHub*

By Mark Skarpness, published on May 29, 2019

In November, I announced at the Google Kranky Geek Event that we planned to release an open source version of the Intel® Collaboration Suite for WebRTC (Intel® CS for WebRTC). In March, the Open WebRTC Toolkit (OWT) was made available on GitHub. This open source end-to-end communication solution includes the latest WebRTC and AI processing applications, we hope developers will use this and make it their own.

This first iteration of OWT brings in several improvements developers can use to create WebRTC apps with ease. Key features include Adaptive-LTR for AVC and HEVC encoding for video quality improvement, added real-time media analytics, MPEG-DASH streaming output and SIP call out features for MCU server, etc.

The Open WebRTC Toolkit is gaining support from others in the community, including Alibaba. "We're thrilled to join Open WebRTC Toolkit (OWT) community, where we can promote the adoption of WebRTC alongside our own goal of further enhancing our audiences’ online video enterprise, social and entertainment experiences. We look forward to working with OWT members to open up new possibilities to use WebRTC across a wide range of applications," says Zhu Zhaoyuan, general manager of Alibaba Cloud Digital Media and CDN.

The source code of OWT is now opened to the public and is available for download on GitHub. Intel will keep the regular release of Intel Collaboration Suite for WebRTC as the Intel’s distribution of OWT. The latest version Intel Collaboration Suite for WebRTC is v4.2 which was released on April 8, 2019 on WebRTC.intel.com

We invite community members to actively participate in discussions, contribute code, and offer feedback.

With the nondescript nature of the GitHub and here at intel home in regards to Open WebRTC Toolkit, it is challenging to ascertain what benefits it offers over...frankly anything. I continued searching, however it seems to be geared toward those who know what it does. I must minimize the bandwidth and server load, hence some 'broker' solutions appear to offer tailored compliance with project objectives. More detailed, or more correctly, any detail regarding this product would prove of benefit; quite a surprise that a company such an intel offers little aside from hope of acceptance by developers without specifics. Please forward any. This project has multi-billion dollar implications, hence the best solution is the only solution for the busy automotive industry and trickle-down through industrial manufacturing supply chains with JIT inventory controls.
