A couple of days ago I got asked this question. "In a pentium processor, how many beats are in the exponent part of a double floating point number?" Does anyone know what this means? I myself have never heard of 'beats' in a processor.

Me neither. I am guessing that "bits" was meant instead. If so, the answer is 11, unless you are referring to the extended register format, in which case it is 15 (I think - not 100% sure.)
