Compiler blanks screen for varying periods

After using Compaq Visual Fortran 6.6 without problems for years, yesterday when I compiled a program, the screen blanked for a second or so and then returned with the usual Outpane paneinformation. Since then, the same thing happenswith every compile orbuild but for varying periods (10 seconds or longer) and sometime does not return the screen at all and I have to restart the computer..
At first, thinking maybe something wasupdating, Ilooked at the Task Manager and found vcspawn.exe running. Other than that, I don't have any idea why ithappens. I've tried restarting the computer andreloadingsome ofVisual Fortran but nothing helps.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Steve: Worked like a charm, many thanks.

I don't know exactly how I messed up cmd.exebut I was fussing around with a old (1989) DOS program for a client trying to obtain an XTfull-screen display for it and I'm sure that's when it happened.
