Compressing Disk Files from Fortan

I am looking for a method for compressing and uncompressing a single disk file from a fortran program. I am aware that I could use system intrinsics to run an external compressor application. I am also aware that I could use the zlib routines. I wonder if anyone has any experience/recomendations to offer on this matter. Thanks in advance, ACAR.
