I would like to get the installer (free version) for Visual Studio Ver 17.1, but only the latest version (Ver 17.2) is available from the site. Where can I find the installer (free version) for Visual Studio Ver 17.1?

My recollection (and I'm not in a position to try this out) is that you can download the installer for a specific version from https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/visualstudio/releases/2022/release-history#fixed-version-bootstrappers as if you were an enterprise or professional subscription holder, but at install time you then select the community edition.

I just tried this - didn't see where I could select Community Edition, at least up to the point where it was asking which "workloads" to install.

Thanks for trying.  They may have closed the loophole and/or [probably] my recollection is faulty.  That said, there may have been an extra step involved - something like cancelling the installation at the point you are selecting workloads, then checking the available editions.

I can experiment myself in a few days when I am back in [relative] civilisation.

Later edit: Found some spare pigeons and tried over a remote desktop session - it is more or less as per the first paragraph - download the installer for the specific version (enterprise or professional - doesn't matter), when it asks you (first time around) for workloads close the workload selection window, then check the available editions - community should be one of the options - select it, you'll get the workloads selection a second time, enable C++ desktop development, and away you go...

Try https://visualstudio.microsoft.com/dev-essentials/ . It may have a 17.1 download available. Otherwise, paid MSDN subscription https://my.visualstudio.com has 17.0. Missed your edit which may better.
