I have a Makefile with ifort option -FR  - I can't find this in the current documentation, what is this option?  I remember seeing it years ago, perhaps it's been replaced with a new option?

I suppose this is or was an abbreviation of -free (over-riding .f implying fixed source format)

Tim is correct.   This is a switch we support because some other Fortrans used it, and it was a convenience for porting makefiles.
