Hello All,
I am looking for Intel Fortran Composer XE 2011 SP1 Update-4 version. I had a student version of latest 2015 version and was just trying to download older version from additional downloads.
I have two queries;
- How do I identify the required version. I mean, will it be 2011 update... or 11.1 update....??? in the drop down menu. It is very confusing!
- If I try to download some of the older versions, it does not download, i.e. after clicking on the link to download, a page opens, it closes and nothing happens!!!
Please help. I am just trying to figure out how can I get the required version for a while and it's really time consuming!
Thanks & Regards,
Aditya

It will be 2011 Update 4. 11.1 is an older version. I tried the download link and it worked for me.
Why is that specific version "required"?

Assuming that you (Aditya N.) want to use the Intel Fortran compiler with Abaqus as you described in your other thread, and given all the troubles with obtaining and installing an older version, I ask: have you tried simply using the current version, which you said you have, with Abaqus?
As we have already suggested, there is a good chance that your needs will be met with the currently installed version.

Here's a summary of understanding and
What I need-
Intel Fortran Composer XE 2011 SP1 Update-4
What I perceive-
Parallel Studio XE Professional Edition covers the capabilities of Parallel Studio XE Composer Edition.
Another problem That I see-
If you go to the link https://software.intel.com/en-us/qualify-for-free-software/student , and then when you go to OFFER, it shows that Parallel Studio XE Composer Edition only for OS X system. I have Windows system, and there's no option for the same!
What I tried-
I tried to Install Intel Parallel Studio XE Professional Edition 2015 (Latest one) and found that Abaqus does not like it and hence was trying to get the specific version mentioned above!
Please let me know if you need any clarifications and please provide your guidance and support!
Thanks,
Aditya Nikam

Chances are it's not the newer version which abacus "Doesn't like." Presumably you installed a qualifying visual studio before running the intel install and that would satisfy abacus, but neither we nor the tools are clairvoyant.

Hello Tim,
Thanks for your reply! I don't understand what you mean by " you installed a qualifying visual studio before running the intel install"
Also, could you comment on following;
What I perceive- (Am I correct???)
Parallel Studio XE Professional Edition covers the capabilities of Parallel Studio XE Composer Edition.

For full capability of parallel studio you would install Microsoft visual studio first. Abaqus would likely not accept the visual studio shell which full price versions of ifort will install if no qualifying visual studio is present. I suppose visual studio 2013 community should work.

There are several versions of parallel studio. Any which include Fortran should work for the purpose of abaqus user subroutines .
I think others may know better than I why there may not be a student windows version of parallel studio with Fortran . A reason is it would have to be packaged without vs shell as Microsoft doesn't allow student pricing for that.
Abaqus would require a full visual studio anyway to provide c++ libraries.

I have to ask - what do you mean by "Abaqus does not like"?
For a student license, what you would need is Intel Software Development Suite Student Edition. This includes Intel Visual Fortran for Windows, but doesn't include the Visual Studio Shell Fortran environment, so you'd need to get Visual Studio separately, such as VS2013 Community Edition. I am not sure that a license for this suite permits download of no-longer-supported compiler versions, but it might.
Sometime later this month, a free student license for Intel Visual Fortran will become available. I don't know exactly when.
I continue to maintain that Abaqus will work fine with the current version if you set up the environment correctly. Nobody has shown me otherwise. You do yourself no favors by trying to install and use a years-old version that is no longer supported.

Having seen the two threads that you originated regarding using IFort with Abaqus (the present one and https://software.intel.com/en-us/forums/topic/559819 ), I think that all this is "much ado about nothing". Perhaps you do not recognize that most of us here are not Abaqus users; I know next to nothing about Abaqus. If your goal is to generate DLLs from Fortran source code such as the source for an example umat.f at the end of the page http://www.maths.cam.ac.uk/computing/software/abaqus_docs/docs/v6.12/books/sub/default.htm , you do not need Visual Studio or any specific version of Intel Fortran. Almost any Windows Fortran compiler can produce the requisite DLL -- I built the DLL using (i) IFort 15.0.4 and (ii) Silverfrost FTN95 7.2, in both cases without using Visual Studio, using command line tools only.
The next question is whether that DLL will work with Abaqus. I don't know, and it may be necessary to have Abaqus installed to obtain a definite answer.
There ought to be a specification for DLL routines that are suitable for use with Abaqus. I have neither searched for nor have seen such a specification. With a correct and complete specification, it may be possible to verify that the DLL works correctly without having Abaqus installed.
Many of these doubts would be resolved more effectively in an Abaqus users' forum rather than here.

Hello All,
Thanks for your comments, suggestions and recommendations. I am not an expert as you all. I am a Petroleum Engineer, who rather wants to look into the application side of software in my field instead of trying different things. Hence you saw phrases in my comments like "Abaqus doesn't like". And hence I was asking for a older version as Abaqus experts confirmed only that particular one to be compatible. Please see a snapshot attached to this comment.
I always got an error message in Abaqus as follows;
Abaqus JOB exa_hydfractureAbaqus 6.14-2Abaqus License Manager checked out the following licenses:Abaqus/Standard checked out 5 tokens from Flexnet server License2.arsc.edu..Begin Compiling Abaqus/Standard User Subroutines6/15/2015 10:35:34 PM'ifort' is not recognized as an internal or external command,operable program or batch file.Abaqus Error: Problem during compilation - exa_hydfracture.fAbaqus/Analysis exited with errors
Abaqus people say that it due to some problem with Fortran installed. They suggested to go for specific version. Please see attachment
Case-1: Installed Parallel Studio XE Professional 2015 Edition. Ran the file showed the above error.
Case-2: Installed Parallel Studio XE Professional Edition and also installed Microsoft Visual Studio 2013 Community Edition. Ran the file showed same error.
Case-3: I wanted to install Parallel Studio XE Composer Edition and try, but on your site I don't see a link to download one for windows. I mean it has link for OS X* (https://software.intel.com/en-us/qualify-for-free-software/student)
I have also attached my Fortran file that I am trying to run. Please check!
Having said this, and considering that I am neither a Intel Fortran Developer nor a Abaqus developer, but a Petroleum Engineer trying to use these tools to study my petroleum related research problem, I would really request to have a concise expert advice on;
- What Fortran Version (exact) to be installed that is available to download as a student?
- What additional Microsoft Visual Studio version to be installed?
Appreciate your patience, your gesture to understand and your time and support!
Thanks
Aditya

If you have installed ifort, simply running the Abaqus command line in the ifort cmd line window will avoid the first error message. You are certainly misleading when you say Abaqus "doesn't like" an ifort installation which you didn't even let Abaqus see. You may have other alternatives, such as making an ifort.bat in your working folder, which you probably won't want to tackle if you haven't found the Abaqus instructions.
As everyone has been telling you, any ifort which is not older than the one recommended by Abaqus should work. Assuming you are running an X64 version of Abaqus, it would require the Intel64 version of ifort, which will be identified in the ifort cmd window. You will probably not get a lot of use from the full Visual Studio if you are just using Abaqus.

How are you starting the command prompt session where you invoke Abaqus? If you use an Abaqus-supplied command prompt, type the following line before trying to use ifort:
call "%IFORT_COMPILER15%bin\ipsxe-comp-vars.bat ia32" vs2013
There is no "student edition" of Parallel Studio XE Composer Edition at present. When you installed Parallel Studio XE and Visual Studio 2013, did you install Visual Studio first or second? If second, uninstall Parallel Studio XE and reinstall it.

Tim, thanks for your clarification!
Steve,
This is how I linked Intel Fortran to Abaqus. Please watch video on this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ynZYVlMIFmQ
After linking as shown in the link above, I opened Abaqus command prompt. It called for the installed Fortran version and the required environment was set. Further I used, abaqus job=exa_hydfracture user=exa_hydfracture command line to run the model that I had. Note: user=....is a .f file. Please refer to the snapshot attached, it will further make it clear.
Yes, I installed Parallel Studio XE 2015 Professional Edition first and then second I installed Microsoft Visual Studio 2013!
Thanks,
Aditya

Steve Lionel (Intel) in #14 wrote:If %IFORT_COMPILER15% contains embedded spaces, such as the spaces in "PROGRAM FILES (X86)" and "Composer XE 2015", you will need to place the first argument to CALL in the above command within a pair of double quotes.

mecej4 is correct about the quotes. I will edit my post above.
The video suggests a reasonable way of doing the integration. I note that in your screenshot that you are using VS2010 and not VS2013. It would be helpful to know if you can compile Fortran code directly using the ifort command. What happens if you type:
ifort -c exa_hydrafracture.f
I also note that you have the default set to C:\temp. This is probably not a good choice for that. I suggest creating a C:\projects folder or something like that and "cd" to that folder.

Yes, I installed Parallel Studio XE 2015 Professional Edition first and then second I installed Microsoft Visual Studio 2013!
As Steve said the installation process should be Visual Studio first, then Parallel Studio XE2015
So you should uninstall Parallel Studio and then reinstall it.

mecej4,
Are you referring to linking of Intel Fortran to Abaqus? I have done so using a method shown in this video. Please see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ynZYVlMIFmQ
If I get you right, yes because when I installed Parallel Studio XE Proffesional Edition 2015, while linking as shown in the video in above link, the command prompt properties should following;
C:\Windows\SysWOW64\cmd.exe /E:ON /V:ON /K ""C:\Program Files (x86)\Intel\Composer XE 2015\bin\ipsxe-comp-vars.bat" intel64 vs2010"
Steve,
I will check on what you suggested! Thanks!
Thanks,
Aditya
